I came to Nagano on a whim in 2018 while on an undergraduate summer break and stayed here. The staff are kind, friendly, and helpful, providing many helpful recommendations for food, activities, or hiking. It is easily accessible by bus, only i walk 3 minutes from the bus stop, the hostel itself is based on backpacker and traditional japanese aesthetics with many amenities built for both function and form, such as the design of the bedrooms. I enjoyed my stay so much that ive returned in 2019 and the owner remembered me after chatting. After enjoying my visit so greatly that we returned again in 2023, it was immediately recognized by the proprietor. This is all to say that on top of great amenities, people who work here are what make this hostel special, which is why if ill come tonagann again, he will definitely stay here again.4.8/524 Feb 2024

I had the best time here making new friends. The hostel itself is really clean and sort of old school, with a rustic charm. There are rows of izakayas (bars) to chill at till late if you walk ten streets down at night. Host orie san was very helpful and speaks pretty good english, so i dont think its ok unless you cant understand japanese. Great place for solo travel and mixing with both locals and foreigners. My number one place to feel good in japan. Every time i visit jap, ill try to stay a few days at 1166 backpackers. The little guesthouse is equipped with simple but beautifully designed facilities and its wonderful people create ambiances of peace and good mood. You can enjoy your time for yourself and participate in many nice and stimulating conversations. Its tucked away in surrounded by flora and fauna, making it incredibly welcoming.4.8/520 Jul 2023

The place is truly remarkable! The staff members are exceptionally friendly, attentive, and helpful, making the experience feel right at home. Its also a fantastic location for solo travelers because the common area is inviting and easy to connect with other guests in the guesthouse. I can only recommend this guest house. This guesthouse is ideal for travelers who want to stay in nagano at a reasonable price, in an comfortable guest home, and enjoy japanese culture. In fact, the guest houses location is excellent, its very clean, has comfortable beds, etc. The staff is also very friendly and helpful. They speak perfect english, making it ideal as suited for foreign visitors. I had dinner in common with everyone (staff, customers, tourists, among others). It was incredibly memorable and magical. We will return and stay there shortly. A fantastic location to stay. The distance between the station and the bus station is only a short taxi or bus ride away. It is simple to walk. We had a great time at 1166 backpackers. Its about ten minutes walk from the station with incline but its well worth it because it is close to the temple and all the shops and restaurants. Hot tip if you are coming from nagano station, stop by the tourist information center in the hotel to get free nanoji stickers (you just need to fill it out i survey of tourism) and scan the free audio tour. The audio trip starts at gandanok station and ends at the zenkoji temple - perfect to listen to as you make your way to hostel. You probably can listen 13 of the 15 recordings.4.6/512 Oct 2023

I had a great time here! Probably my favorite place to stay the entire trip. I loved hanging out with the extremely friendly staff, their wonderful neighbors, and other tourists because of the common rooms design, which made socializing really simple. The staff was also very kind and helpful, sharing snacks and helping with itenerary planning. Excellent and spotless beds and amenities were also provided. I want to return to this hostel. I must express my gratitude to orie and her peers for providing the finest lodging. We are really grateful for the best service provided by this hotel, and i believe you guys are the greatest. The following morning, we left the hotel after a brief trip to the snow monkey park.
