Take a break from the hustle and bustle from the cities of Iceland and go on an adventure to the country's South Coast to conquer nature. In this activity, you'll go hiking and ice climbing at the Sólheimajökull glacier, which is part of a much larger glacier known as Mýrdalsjökull. Sólheimajökull is small compared to the other glaciers, and it's relatively easier to access and traverse that's why it has become a popular tourist attraction in the country. You'll begin by making your way on your own to the glacier, and you'll meet up with an English-speaking guide at Sólheimajökull's parking lot. The guide will provide you with top grade glacier hiking and ice climbing equipment, and then you'll go hiking up the glacier for 30 minutes to get your blood and adrenaline pumping. On your way up the glacier, you'll get the chance to see a glacier moulin, which is the only part of glaciers with running water. Glacier moulins are usually a sign that the glacier is changing; either it's expanding or it's melting completely. You'll also pass by sinkholes, caves that you can enter. There are also volcanic sandhills formed by the eruptions of the nearby Katla Volcano, which is one of the largest and most active volcanoes in the country; you'll get the opportunity to get a panoramic view of the volcano as you go up. After the 30-minute hike, your guide will explain the rules of ice climbing, its dangers and security rules, and teach you how to properly use your ice climbing equipment. By ice climbing, you'll be able to discover and explore numerous ice shafts that go all up to the heart of the glacier, along with other hidden gems that can only be accessed with the help of the rope, harnesses and an ice axe. This is a must for nature lovers. It's also said that the glacier is melting due to climate change, and that it's possible that it along with the country's other glaciers will become extinct one day, so all the more reason to book this activity while the glacier is still alive and kicking.
