Venue
Go on a day tour to the Western Scottish Highlands and explore its most atmospheric lochs and castles! Meet up with a friendly English-speaking tour guide at Rabbie's Café Bar, Waterloo Place in Edinburgh, and board a coach that will take you on a roadtrip to the highlands and back. The first stop of this wonderful journey is Doune Castle, which was built over 600 years ago and is still in great condition. You’ll have time to visit it, and if you’re a fan of 'Monty Python and The Holy Grail' or the ‘Outlander’ series, you can learn about how the castle was used as a filming set for both of them. After Doune Castle, you will go through the town of Callander, cross the Highland Boundary Fault Line, and leave behind the rolling farmland for the wild mountains and forests of the Highlands. You will make a short stop at Loch Lubnaig, then continue over the Braes of Balquhidder, and wind your way through the tough knot of mountains known as Breadalbane (the name means the "high country of Scotland"). After getting through those mountains, you will stop by the Klichurn Castle, the former home of the Campbells of Breadalbane, situated on the edge of Loch Awe; you will also take your lunch here. Next, you will visit the picturesque town of Inveraray by the shores of Loch Fyne where you can admire its castle, which was built back in the 18th century; there's even a prison that you can explore. After visiting Inveraray, you'll drive up the steep-sided mountains known as the Arrochar Alps and visit the breathtaking viewpoint known as 'Rest and Be Thankful'. From there, you'll skirt around Loch Long, then down to the "Bonnie, Bonnie Banks" of Loch Lomond, and make a short stop at the conservation village of Luss, where you can wander around taking in its quaint houses and stunning views across the loch. From Luss, you will stop for a photo op underneath Stirling Castle to commemorate your journey, and then head back to Edinburgh.
