The turn of the year is one of the most anticipated moments. Apart from bringing a new spirit, of course there are national holidays and collective leave that have been set by the government. You can use them to take a vacation, gather with family, or do other fun activities. Red dates or public holidays are usually set due to religious celebrations or historical days. 1. New Year 2025 (January 1)

 

The New Year 2025 falls on Monday, January 1. Usually, the beginning of the year has been celebrated since the end of the year. There are various ideas of activities that can be done on New Year's Eve. Starting from gathering with family or loved ones, staycation in Puncak villas while karaoke, grilling corn, and barbeque. The seconds of the turn of the new year are usually enlivened with spectacular fireworks at several popular locations. 2. Isra Miraj 2025 (January 27)

Isra Miraj marks the Prophet Muhammad's journey to the 7th heaven in one night using burak. This event, which took place on the 27th of Rajab, is an important moment for Muslims. On this sacred night, the Prophet Muhammad received a direct order from Allah to perform the 5 daily prayers. In Indonesia, Isra Miraj is celebrated as a national holiday. There are various celebrations and unique traditions in each city to celebrate it. If you want to experience it, you can go to Cirebon and visit Kasepuhan Palace to enjoy recitation and the distribution of bogana rice. If you stay in Bandung, you can see the torchlight parade that takes place at night. Meanwhile, in Jogja, there's Rajaban Peksi Buraq, which is a parade with burak made of grapefruit peels and filled with fruits. Later, the fruit will be distributed around the Yogyakarta Palace. Coinciding with the long weekend, you can also take a vacation in these cities. For example, exploring Farm House Lembang or Ratu Boko Palace.

 

3. Chinese New Year 2025 (January 29)

 

The next national holiday is Chinese New Year, which is a holiday for the Chinese community. TThe date of Chinese New Year changes annually due to the lunisolar calendar, which combines the cycles of the moon and sun. Generally, Chinese New Year is celebrated for 15 days, starting from Chinese New Year to Yuan Xiao or Cap Go Meh. This festive season is marked by family gatherings, visits to ancestral graves, and enjoying traditional dishes like kue keranjang (glutinous rice cake), mandarin oranges, and any sweets. The celebrations also include the tradition of giving angpao (red envelopes) to unmarried family members, decorating homes with all-red ornaments, and lighting fireworks. Following the Chinese New Year, comes the collective leave. Still in the nuances of Chinese New Year celebrations, people usually take advantage of joint leave by doing religious tours to several nearby temples or shrines. For example, visiting Sam Poo Kong Semarang to pray or watch the barongsai (lion dance) parade. 

 

4. Nyepi Day 2025 (March 29)

Hari Raya Nyepi is a Hindu New Year in Balines Saka calendar that is celebrated annually in March or April. The word nyepi comes from Sanskrit, meaning “silent” or “serene”. This tradition dates back for centuries since 78 AD and is deeply rooted in Balinese culture. In 2025, Nyepi Day falls on March 29. In addition to religious ceremonies, Nyepi Day is also synonymous with the Ogoh Ogoh Parade which takes place the night before and also Omed-Omedan which is done after. These two activities are very popular and highly anticipated by tourists because the performances have strong artistic and cultural elements and involve many people. 5. Eid al-Fitr Day 2025

Eid al-Fitr or also known as Lebaran, is a Muslim holiday which is celebrated every 1 Shawwal in the Hijri calendar. This special moment marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, where previously Muslims fasted for a whole month. Eid al-Fitr is not only about celebration, but also a moment to return to nature, win, forgive each other, and build friendly relationships. 6. Good Friday 2025 (April 18)

The next red date 2025 is Good Friday or also known as Good Friday. It is a very important day for Christians and Catholics around the world. Good Friday falls on the Friday before Easter week. In this tradition, people commemorate Jesus Christ being crucified to atone for the sins of mankind with a drama performance of the crucifixion tableau that is often held in churches across Indonesia. 9. Ascension of Jesus Christ 2025 (May 29)

In Indonesia, the Ascension of Jesus Almasih is celebrated as a national holiday. The Ascension of Jesus Al Masih is a commemoration of the lifting of Jesus to heaven after 40 days of resurrection. For those who celebrate, there will be mass in church. As a red date that clashes on Thursday, there is a collective leave on Friday, May 30, 2025. This moment can be a long holiday that can be used to gather with family, friends, or loved ones. For example, a staycation at a Bandung hotel, a vacation to Bali, playing at Dufan Ancol, or staying at Dusun Bambu. 

 

10. Birth of Pancasila Day 2025 (June 1)

The next national holiday is the Birth of Pancasila. The selection of June 1 as the birthday of Pancasila was motivated by the moment of the BPUPKI session in formulating the foundation of the Indonesian state. President Soekarno himself conveyed his ideas regarding the basis of the state at the BPUPKI session on June 1, 1945 with the name Pancasila, which consists of the words 'Panca' (five) and 'Sila' (principle / basis). In order to celebrate the birth of Pancasila, people across Indonesia have their own traditions to celebrate. For example, in Blitar there is a Grebeg Pancasila event to Kirab Insan Pancasila in Bandung. You can also take a historical tour by visiting the Pancasila Building, the National Museum, touring the Old City, and Bung Karno's Exile House. 11. Vesak 2025 (May 12)

Vesak Day is an important moment for Buddhists around the world to commemorate three sacred events: the birth, enlightenment, and passing away of Gautama Buddha. Observed in May or June every year, this celebration is not only full of spiritual significance, but also a rich and colorful cultural tradition. This year, Vesak Day falls on May 23, 2025. At this moment, not only religious activities can be done but also can be filled with interesting activities such as watching art and cultural performances to tasting typical dishes served during Vesak Day. You can also buy tickets to Borobudur Temple to celebrate this celebration. Because in Indonesia, Vesak Day is celebrated on a large scale at the Borobudur Temple Complex, Yogyakarta. 12. Eid al-Adha 2025 (June 6)

Eid al-Adha or Hari Raya Haji usually falls on the 12th of Dhulhijah. Eid al-Adha is a worldwide Muslim holiday to commemorate the sacrifice. Namely when Prophet Ibrahim was willing to sacrifice his son Ismail as a form of realization of knowledge of God which was then replaced by a larger sacrifice. The usual routine is to perform the Eid al-Adha prayer and then slaughter the sacrificial animals. Apart from enjoying the sacrificial animals, people generally also celebrate Eid al-Adha by visiting relatives, going to tourist attractions, or relaxation. After a busy day, you can take some time off from Eid al-Adha to relax at a salon in Jakarta to prepare yourself for the day ahead.

 

13. Islamic New Year 2025 (June  27)

The next national holiday is the Islamic New Year, a very important moment for Muslims to reflect and remember the hijra of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers from the city of Mecca to the city of Medina. This holiday is not only a time to relax, but also to explore the rich traditions and cultures that exist in Indonesia. When Islamic New Year arrives, there are many destinations in Indonesia that celebrate it in a distinctive way. For example, in Ponorogo Regency, Grebeg Suro is an annual event that attracts attention with a parade at Ponorogo Square. In Solo, Kirab Kebo Bule is one of the most anticipated traditions, symbolizing the arrival of the month of Suro or Muharram. While in Jogja, the Tapa Bisu tradition is held on Muharram 1. 14. 80th Independence Day of the Republic of Indonesia (August 17)

15. Maulid Nabi 2025 (September 5)

Maulid Nabi is the anniversary of the birth of the prophet Muhammad every 12 Rabiul Awal. In 2025, the birthday of Prophet Muhammad falls on September 16. In Indonesia, there are various celebrations and traditions as a form of joy for the birth of the Prophet. One of the most popular is the Sekaten ceremony held at the Yogyakarta Palace and Surakarta Palace. Sekaten takes place from 5 to 12 Rabiul Awal with various stages. If you want to follow this ceremony, you can book a hotel in Jogja near the palace. In Gorontalo, there is also a tradition of making traditional specialties which are then arranged in Tolangga shaped like a tower boat. Later the food will be distributed during the parade. 

 

16. Christmas 2025 (December 25)

The last national holiday is Christmas. Christians and Catholics annually celebrate the Birth of Jesus Christ or commonly called Christmas on December 25. To welcome Christmas, people decorate their homes, public facilities such as malls, hospitals, and banks with Christmas trees. In general, Christians and Catholics also perform mass at church, gather with family, send Christmas greetings, and exchange gifts or Christmas hampers. After Christmas Day comes Christmas leave, which can be used for quality-time with family by staycation or booking hotels, vacationing to tourist attractions, or renting villas.
