Air New Zealand Features
Air New Zealand is a national airline owned by New Zealand. The airline is based in Auckland, which is located near Mangere in the southern part of Auckland's urban area and is headquartered in a building called "The Hub," which is located 20 km (12 miles) from Auckland Airport, in the Auckland Wynyard Quarter. Air New Zealand operates scheduled passenger flights to 20 domestic and 32 international destinations in 20 countries, mainly around and within the Pacific Rim. Air New Zealand has been a member of the Star Alliance since 1999.
In 1940, Air New Zealand, originally was Tasman Empire Airways Limited (TEAL), a company that operates trans-Tasman flights between New Zealand and Australia. TEAL became wholly owned by the New Zealand government in 1965, which was later renamed Air New Zealand. The airline served international routes until 1978 when the government merged TEAL with the New Zealand domestic airline, National Airways Corporation (NAC), into one airline under the name Air New Zealand. Air New Zealand was privatized in 1989 but returned to government property in 2001 after being close to bankruptcy because it failed to cooperate with the Australian airline Ansett Australia
The Air New Zealand route network focuses on Australasia and the South Pacific, with long-haul services to East Asia, America, and the United Kingdom. Air New Zealand currently operates a fleet of Airbus A320s, the Airbus A320neo family, Boeing 777 and Boeing 787 jets, as well as regional ATR 72 fleets and Bombardier Q300 turboprops. Air New Zealand was awarded the Airline of the Year in 2010 and 2012 by the Air Transport World Global Airline Awards. Also, in 2014, Air New Zealand was ranked as the safest airline in the world by JACDEC.
