Our room was perfect. And the entire room is immaculate. For the ultimate culinary experience and premium quality of the food, this hotel is a fantastic bargain. This place is unique. Lovely lowcost roman with an exquisite atmosphere and dining experience. 20 years of hopping on trips to see laws in Japan and now as temporary expats due to husbands job transfer. We mostly stay in lowend to moderately priced onset hotels with a very occasional splash. This little moderately priced private bathtubsonly roman that best suited our older visiting us friends from the us. We shared a Japanesestyle room. Our friends shared a similarly sized room with platform beds, both rooms with stunning mountain views, a nonsmoking floor, and each room with a wooden tub on a veranda and a separate wooden tub inside. Minimizing experience in each room. Unbelievably pleasant and soothing in a charmingly remote mountain onset area an hour by car from Takakayama city. The dinner and breakfast were of kiseki quality, and we did not even get the highest priced meal course. If you are not driving, transportation is available from Takakayama and Yasumoto on the opposite side. It was great! As a caveat as stated in a few other reviewsOur room was perfect. I strongly advise you to avoid reading other reviews because as tourists in japan, this ryokan met all the criteria and offered us a fantastic stay overall, which was more enjoyable than the fivestar hakone ryokan we had stayed at days earlier. Nestled among the mountains, almost as far as the road goes, this sleepy spot in the japanese Alps had breathtaking views and two incredible rooftop onsen baths that we enjoyed on a perfectly clear night. We splurged on one of the suites, but it was well worth every penny, half the price of the hakone stay. There were some signs of wear and tear adding charm, but the room was immaculate, and there were two private onsen baths (indoor and outside) available for guests to enjoy. The kaiseki supper was excellent, as was the breakfast, both of which were served in private booths in the beautifully lit dining area with more mountain views.4.8/519 Jan 2024

We had the pleasure of being a guest here in 2016, and until now when I'm booking another trip to Japan, I discovered how calm and joy it was to stay here. It was really a unique location surrounded by nature's beauty. We arrived late in the evening, and we discovered that our lovely host had checked the bus that comes every hour to see if we were on it until we finally arrived to welcome us. Even though we arrived after supper, they prepared a fantastic supper. Our room, with a private mineral bathtub and a view of the river, was peaceful bliss. Overall, i highly recommend this place and will definitely return in the fall to see the mountain scenery in a different color. Im writing this on our morning before leaving. We stayed here for one night and it was a very magical place. It has an old rustic charm with excellent service. I speak broken japanese and my wife doesnt speak japanese at all. Despite the language barrier, the staff was very accommodating and helpful. The service here showcases the best of japanese hospitality and we have been here for a week and a half staying at various locations. The rooms have their own builtin onsen, one wood and one outdoor stone. Do not pay attention to reviews talking about the mold. In fact, the baths themselves are very hot and very clean, with no mold or debris inside. There is even a pamphlet in the room describing the safety standards they must adhere to. The only criticism i can say about the rooms is that they are old and show their age. A little touch up can be helpful, but otherwise, we are in a mountain town so expect some rustic charm. There are also private outdoor onsens that you can book, wood and stone. We recommend booking these late at night so you can see the magical moon and stars view while bathing in the onsen. Finally, supper. Ben Dang niSu qing rashii desuyo! Best experience so far on our trip. Tasting the hida beef was worth the long trek here. I wouldnt give a damn about the unfavorable reviews. People seem to be grumbling about some things, which i personally find a little unfair. My husband and i had an amazing time here. The staff was incredibly kind and accommodating. The cuisine was also excellent. I had the opportunity to sample more of the cuisine here than in any other city ive visited. Even though we had to adjust the bath temperature, they were still quite wonderful. I have no issues other than that i wish i could have stayed longer. We were only able to stay one night due to our travel schedule. The area is beautiful and very peaceful. The person who welcomed us was very nice and explained everything to us. Dont pay attention to the bad reviews. Yes, there is a touch of old to the place, but thats part of its charm. The onsen in the room is amazing and you can also book 2 outdoor baths for yourself just put your name on the list. The tasting menu was delicious. I highly recommend this place, go there relax and dont think about anything else.4.6/518 May 2024

Our room was on the third floor and faced the lush mountain and river. There were 2 onset bathtubs, one semi-open and the other on the patio. The patio tub's water temperature is just right, but the indoor tub was a little too hot and had to be cool down with cold water. The food was excellent and they made great use of the enormous fire pit at the reception to grill the perfect fish.4.6/520 Jun 2023

We had an amazing time at this ryokan. We chose a room with an indoor or outdoor thermal bath. The water was at the ideal temperature and could be controlled by adding cold water. The room is large, and they provided free water, tea, sour, and green tea to prepare. The food was very good, made with several courses and takes about 90 minutes. We also used the outdoor rock hot spring bath, it was a nice experience seeing the stars in the clear sky of kamikochi. The staff was very friendly, and the receptionist spoke excellent english. The only problem i can find is that the only form of communication is phone calls. There is no email, so we had to ask the previous hotel to find out if they accepted credit cards.
