El Calafate appears to be a cute town with good access to the Perito Moreno Glaciar. Unfortunately the Koi Aiken hotel was not a good choice. Its location is away from the town centre, with only one other restaurant nearby. The hotel was tired and unkempt. Our room was fusty, the carpet stained, the bath chipped, towels well-worn and the food unmemorable. There must be a better choice in this town.

This hotel did its job for a comfortable place to sleep, but that's about it. We arrived late and due to holidays restaurants were all booked for dinner. We assumed we could eat at the hotel, as they advertise a restaurant, but said they weren't serving dinner that night. Thankfully the staff called and found us a place walking distance. The breakfast was mediocre compared to other included breakfast on our trip. There was limited offerings for protein and the "Orange Juice" tasted like powdered Tang. They also didn't have enough place settings for everyone eating in the morning and ran out of dishes. Note, there are no elevators and breakfast is on the second floor. Although we don't use the rooms for TV while on vacation, there was a huge football game on late that we intended to watch before bed. The TV didn't work and even after the staff checked it out, they couldn't fix it. The internet was extremely slow in the rooms and only worked, but not well, in the lobby. Showers were scolding hot even with the cold water turned up and we killed 4 spiders with webs throughout the room and bathroom. If you are just looking for a quiet place to sleep outside of town, this will work, but you have about a 30 minute walk or 200 peso taxi ride. You also need to know where to locate the taxi stands. Some people didn't and couldn't figure out how to get back from town.

I actually loved this place. I stayed here for two nights as part of a tour. Admittedly, it wasn't as fancy as the other hotels, but it had a very comfortable, informal feel, charm in its decor and friendly staff that made me feel like family. Some things to note - it is "old school" with metal keys to the doors and room safe, and the decor may be a little outdated. But that homey feel more than made up for that. It also is a bit far from town, but after being around so many touristy places and crowded hotels on the tour, I liked the peace. There is a restaurant within walking distance, Rústico Asador y Parrilla, which is a ten minute walk along the water, if you don't want to take a taxi into town.

About a thirty minute walk from the center of town, this rustic gem sits atop the hill overlooking the lake and city center. Clean, modest rooms, generous breakfasts and friendly, inviting staff makes for a restful nest while in el calafate. Bathrooms provide the fragrant calafate berry soap. Watch out as the water in the bathrooms is very hot. Take advantage of the value and wholesome box lunches at the front desk for your glacier day trip. Just minutes from the grand lake where you can enjoy a quiet walk.

Valentina who works in the reception is an absolutely gem! She took a look at me, and asked if I was sick. I was having chills, and as soon as I told her that, she immediately ordered hot water with honey and lemon for me, and had it brought up to my room, along with the soup I ordered. Later, she checked on me, and asked if there was anything I needed. She even informed my tour guide that I was sick and needed the rest, and to contact me the next morning instead of that evening. Thank you, Valentina, for the attentive and personal service, which is rare these days. Aside from the amazing Valentina, Hosteria Koi Aiken also has an amazing chef. I recommend eating here. The dinner was excellent, along with the breakfast and lunch box that we ordered for our excursion.
