I noticed one reviewer said this was a pack packers paradise. They were not wrong. If you are not a serious hiker/trekker, this is not the place for you. Another reviewer wrote “this is not a five star hotel”, and I would agree with that comment. However, it is probably the best in El Chalten.
Location: *****. LC is located in the middle of town on top of a knoll, giving it a panoramic view of the valley and the town below. There is not much in town, except for a some bar/restaurants and beer joints where young back packers hang out. And like a ski town where everyone walks around with skis, her everyone walks around with pack packs and trekking poles.
Rooms: ****. While the rooms could use a refresh, ours was perfectly fine and clean. The room has one huge window showing off the spectacular up valley valley. The bathroom had a combo jacuzzi tub/shower (which I always hate) and a single vanity.
Service: *****. The front desk staff could not have been more helpful. They arranged our transfers to and from the airport, and while we could have taken the small bus shuttle for the 2.5 hour ride from the El Calafate Airport, we choose to have a private driver. The staff was also very cooperative when we decided to cut our stay down from three to two nights, giving us a refund for the last night. While my group (two couples) enjoy hiking, we are not serious about it, and found there was very little alternative activities to warrant staying another night.
Food & Beverage: ***. We had one dinner and two breakfasts. The dinner was fine, but not memorable. Breakfast selections were good, but not very broad. There are a couple of lounges where one can sit and enjoy a drink.
WIFI: *. The guide books were totally correct; cell service and WIFI is not existent outside your hotel. Apparently everyone relies on Direct TV for cell service, which is spotty and best and slow. So come prepared to have minimal service.
LC is a perfectly fine hotel in the middle of a poor selection of hotels. Rooms are good and service was excellent, but if you are not interested in serious hiking/trekking, El Chalten is not the place for you.
