Great experience. From the logistical support at the airport in Shell to our guides to the food: all excellent. Our two guides made the time there really special. The absolute highlight was visiting Simon’s village. Sharing a bowl of chicha prepared by our host’s wife was unforgettable. A night hike in the jungle, morning canoe trip, river dolphins, birds at a clay lick, bats all around in the evening, colorful snakes, beautiful flowers, learning the traditions of the Achuar: fantastic! Thank you to everyone involved in the Kapawi enterprise.

This was an amazing experience. If you have a chance to get to do this trip, go! I went with my family, my husband, and my two teenage boys. My husband and I took this trip to celebrate our 20th anniversary.

Our family just returned from an incredible week at Kapawi Lodge. We chose this lodge for the profound deep jungle experience, connection with the indigenous people of this area (the Achuar), and the previous positive reviews. I am unable to explain just how incredible our experience was, much more than I could have ever even expected. We had an Ecuadorian guide, Filipe, who acted as our interpreter, bird/animal expert and a photography whiz. We also had an Achuar guide, Simon, who knew all about the forrest, rivers, animals and culture. These ambassadors were with us all the time and became an extension of our family for the week. They were patient, kind, fun and ever anticipating our needs. We had our daughters ages 12 and 9 who were always on their heels and they could not have been more wonderful with them. The entire staff was amazing. The remodel has been mostly completed (a few more cabins to build) and the rooms, gathering areas and walkways are perfect. Very lovely and new. The food was wonderful. Incredible given how deep into the jungle you are! We saw monkeys, sloths, river dolphins, an anteater, otters, cayman, so many incredible birds and more. We visited neighboring communities and went to the schools, clinic and houses. We were treated so kindly by all and with so much generosity. If you ever have the opportunity to visit the headwaters of the Amazon and want to experience both the culture and the vastness of diversity of the jungle, I can't recommend Kapawi enough. It is a true adventure. Go with an open mind and be prepared to be surprised and delighted in ways you couldn't expect.

We were a group of 10 friends who went to Kapawi for 5 nights/4 Days in February. It was a fantastic experience and every single one of us loved it. For being out in the middle of the jungle, the accommodations are impressive. The huts were comfortable, the food was delicious and the staff was great. We loved our local guide, Patricio, and our boat driver Simon. They were both extremely knowledgeable and very helpful. The schedule and activities at the lodge provide you with the perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. We were up at dawn most days to see the birds, monkeys and river dolphins. We watched the sunset from the water in order to see the wildlife. We had opportunities to take an afternoon nap or explore the jungle. We loved visiting a few local villages and seeing how the Achuar people live. We went during the dry season and saw very few mosquitoes. It was hot and muggy but cooled down enough to sleep at night. The plane ride there was much better than I had feared and I actually enjoyed it! I understand the lodge is closed for the remainder of the year for some necessary repairs and maintenance. I’m sure the climate in the jungle can be brutal on the walkways and wooden structures. I encourage you to go once it’s open again!

I choose Kapawi Lodge because it is owned and operated by the Kapawi People. The staff are partners more than employees. We are naturalists and the nature experience was beyond my wildest expectations. I added over 50 new birds to my life list in a week. The guides were excellent. They knew the birds and accommodated our interests. I want to become fluent in Spanish and return to the jungle soon. I was pleased at the lack of mosquitoes. The biggest challenge was dealing with the heat .... up to 35C. Thanks for a great trip. I wish you well on the renovations. I would like to see better birding guide books and a birding scope for viewing birds in the marsh. A canopy walk would be a welcome addition. The rustic nature of the lodge suited me just fine. I went for the experience, not luxury.
