I stayed for over a week here and was very happy with the hotel. This review obviously takes into account that it is a budget hotel with facilities to match but, all considering, it is a very comfortable stay at an excellent price.
Pictures on the internet do not do it justice as it comes across as a little gloomy which it is not (though some interior rooms are dark). It is also spotlessly clean, more so than many high end hotels and I'm including some 5* I've stayed in. The furnishings are dated but well maintained and functional. There's good a/c which works well. It's a cold water mandi style bathroom which is fine.
The mattresses aren't sprung (foam/cloth I believe) and don't look much on first appearance but I slept very well every night and have been known to suffer a bad back on some beds.
The communal balconies at the front are lovely and great to sit out and read, listen to some music, grab a beer, etc. (though you'll have to buy a beer from outside!).
I stayed on the top floor which was nice and airy and not too noisy - the exception being Sunday morning from 6am for a couple of hours when a multitude of the town's ladies descend in front to embark on some morning 'ola raga' (exercises) accompanied by insanely noisy music (think outdoor festival volume!). You will not sleep through it unless in a medical vegetative state but it's outside of the the hotel's control, so no complaints from me. Not best paired with a hangover.
The staff were all nice and friendly but lacking in knowledge of the area and very limited as to advise they're able to offer. However this isn't an issue with the internet and friendly townsfolk. Good security in front keeping an eye on motorbikes throughout the night (I rented) and is hassle free 24hr access.
I stayed in Aug 2018 and rooms on the top floor (cheaper than others, but the same quality) were only Rp140k. A real bargain.
All in all, thoroughly recommended and I'd definitely stay again if I returned to Singkawang!
Nice town too!! :)
