We were 'upgraded' to this property after inquiring on another place that had some issues, or so we were told. However, the location is quite removed from any amenities and while there was a driver, English was a problem and we ended up stranded once. Not to mention that the particular road you need to get into Ubud from here becomes heavily congested for the best part of the day, making a 15 minute journey up to 40. The master bathroom was mouldy and there was a general lack of towels, plates, cups etc. The pool overlooks other properties so is not entirely private and there were staff around all the time, meaning we felt we had to keep curtains closed for privacy and thus not enjoying the pretty view.

Rumah Bakti is in a small village, walking distance from Goa Gajah. It is an oasis of calm. We (two couples) stayed in the 2 villa accommodation. One villa has the lounge and kitchen area as well as the bedroom and bathroom, the other has a spacious bedroom and bathroom. Breakfast is served in an outdoor eating area under a gazebo over looking the spotlessly clean pool. There is a choice between western and Balinese food - we chose the Balinese breakfast - tempeh, tofu, spinach and soya beans with peanut, and chilli sauce - lovely. Each morning a staff member would make the offering at a small temple next to the gazebo. He placed fragrant frangipanis and hibiscus flowers in the statues around the beautiful garden. During the day we could hear the birds and at night, the occasional owl. Each day, Made (our host) arranged for Nyoman, the driver, to drive us into Ubud. It is a short drive - 20 mins in the day, maybe 10mins at night, depending upon which part of Ubud you want to go to. He was a very safe driver and nothing was too much trouble for him. Ari, who is related to the host, conducted a cooking class for us. For a very reasonable price, she took us to a local market in a village outside Ubud where we bought ingredients for our lunch. (See separate review for the cooking class.) Ari also conducts tours - 1/2 day and full day. She is an excellent driver too. There were a number of people working at the villa and every single person was kind and thoughtful. My husband had an unexpected health issue. The staff were very attentive and reassuring. Ari and Made organised an ambulance which arrived quickly. It took him to the nearby hospital where he was assessed. My husband was transferred to Kuta hospital and had to stay overnight. Nyoman, the manager, Guru and his son, drove all the way from Ubud to visit him in hospital and gave him a lovely fruit basket. Ari and Made kept in contact with me and provided support. Their kindness was heartwarming. On our return we continued to enjoy the villa and the village surrounds. We enjoyed cooling off in the pool and relaxing in the shade. There is a massage room on site which is very convenient and enjoyable. Made recommended a local restaurant for dinner. It overlooked the rice fields and the food was lovely. It was lovely to stay with Made, Ari, Nyoman and the rest of the team - locals who know the area and genuinely want to share their beautiful country with us. I highly recommend Rumah Bakti!

I was notified by Guru that the villa we were supposed to stay in at Cherry House had some maintenance issues so we were upgraded to Billa Rumah Bakti. The villa is amazing albeit a little out of Ubud. It was no trouble for the staff to take us to the local restaurants free of charge. Nyoman was a great driver. Even though we only stayed here for one night we were made to feel very welcome. I would recommend this villa for anyone who is seeking a quiet little retreat.

The place is in the heart of a village near the Goa gajah cave...isolated from the touristy bits but free transport to Ubud centre and market was provided which made things very convenient. Made who owns the place and Guru the manager helped us with all queries and arranged transport to the airport and shopping area etc all within short notice...breakfast was delicious pancake and eggs and coffee/tea along with fresh fruits served in the sitout outside which gave a very relaxed garden feel. One of the best pancakes I’ve had thanks to their cook. A few things that I think the villa needs to become a sought-after property: place shows it’s age...the furniture, linen, bedsheets etc are worn down and aren’t sparkling clean as such. Although we booked for 7 persons, there was only enough cutlery for 4 or so and not enough pots and pans for cooking proper meals. They did provide extra upon request though. The pool was clean enough and we enjoyed having a night time dip as well. The other thing to note - the description made it seem like a 4 bedroom villa but it was a 2.5 bedroom (2 double beds and 1 single) and the 4th bedroom was actually a 1-bedroom villa accessible by a staircase outside. So we had to split one couple in the other villa while their kids stayed with us in the main 3-bedroom but not sure the arrangement works for everyone - especially those with young kids or elderly who can’t climb. I would recommend that this is made clear in the description so guests aren’t in for a bit of surprise. While the roads to the villa etc are dark and may not be accessible after sunset, the nearby village itself gave a true feeling of the old Bali that you can’t find in Kuta or seminyak anymore. Overall for the price, it was a good find but it has potential to be better if a few improvements are made.
