We arrived at Pensione La Calcina after a long journey, and were met by the Samuel at Reception, who thrust a prosecco in our hands and allowed us to recover from the flight and boat transfer. He was a star throughout, with plenty of great restaurant suggestions and other helpful tips. The staff on the whole were outstanding, from the chamber maid to the waiting staff and the people manning Reception, especially Samuel and Lorella. The breakfast was excellent: fresh bread, croissants, jams, yogurts, great coffee and fresh fruit, which set us up for walking all over this wonderful city. What could this hotel do better? The rooms were great, but the water pressure was not and the shower was therefore not the best in our room at the front of the hotel. The bed was superbly comfortable, with plenty of bathroom toiletries and a fantastic air conditioning system that welcomed us with open arms after a day walking in the heat. We ate at the hotel's restaurant on the first evening there and while the food is ok, it is not especially adventurous, and the service was very slow indeed. Would we stay here again? We certainly would, and highly recommend it as a place to stay and use as a base to enjoy Venice from.

Excellent place to stay, located in one of my favorite places in Venice, the staff is kind and welcoming, the place is sparkling clean, comfortable and peaceful, facing the beautiful island of Giudecca, breakfast is generous. Thank you very much !

Very nice hotel, friendly staff, clean and good location. Vaporetto station Zattere very close by (50 metres), but St. Marcus Square (10-15 minutes), Rialto Bridge (15-20 minutes) and everything else is also in walking distance. We loved Dorsoduro because it is not as touristy and crowded. The view of the Giudecca canal is simply great. Nice bars (Al Squero!!) and restaurants close by. The rooms are small but beautifully designed and totally clean. Beds are super comfortable! Air con works well. Bathroom is equipped with toileteries, slippers and bathrobes. It has a bathtub, not a shower, and a shower curtain which I personally don't like very much. But it was ok. Water pressure was pretty poor, but again, who cares, we're not in Venice for showering ;-). And it was totally ok and worked well. Warm water gets super hot, need to be careful there. We had room no. 4 with a private terrace, overlooking the Guidecca Canal. It's loacated on the first floor, I could imagine that the views from the upper floors are even nicer, but our view already was breathtaking. I really liked having so many windows, 2 out front and one door to the side with access to the terrace. The terrace also overlooks the Guidecca canal (no protection from sun or rain). We didn't use the terrace much (obviously, there is just too much to see in Venice), but it was still great to have it. Whether it's really worth the extra money is a very individual decision. It is possible (extra charge) to get breakfast on that private terrace. Which may make sense, because there are only a few tables in front of the hotel where one can have breakfast. If they are taken, one has to go inside (or wait). The breakfast room inside is also very beautiful, but in Corona times we didn't want to have breakfast inside. Don't quite understand why they don't use the restaurant terrace for breakfast, there would be enough space. Breakfast was good, very nice coffee, nice brioche, eggs (scrambled, fried etc.), yoghurt, water, cheese, ham, nutella, jam, honey. No fruit, unfortunately, but there is a supermarket close by where one can buy fruit. It is also possible to have breakfast on the roof terrace (extra charge). The roof terrace is pretty cool with a nice view - but it's not generally open, one has to book it and get the keys from reception. But it was also possible to go upstairs for a quick look without prior booking. The staff was very friendly with some of them being super-friendly. All speak English very well, some speak even German. It really is a great place for exploring Venice, we very much liked being close to everything but still far enough away from the crowds. Very easy to get there from Tronchetto or Piazzale Roma (by vaporetto). We loved Venice during Corona times. I haven't been to Venice in 20 years and was always a little hesitant to go again due to the tourist crowds. That's why I thought now is the time. And it was. It is already pretty crowded again, especially on the week-ends (Saturday definitely is the worst day), but when comparing it to the pictures one associates with crowded Venice, it's nowhere near that. We visited Marcus Square and Rialto bridge really early in the mornings (7-8 am) and we were nearly alone. During day time it's getting more crowded, but only in the hotspots (and it's still nowhere near the normal crowds in August). In Dorsoduro, Cannaregio and Castello we were pretty much on our own and actually saw more residents than tourists. No cruise ships ruining the view! St. Marcus Dome was closed for renovation, there was a queue for Il Campanile (I guess, 20 minutes), therefore we decided to go for the bell tower of San Giorgio Maggiore instead. Good choice, we simply walked through and went up and were up there together with 1-3 other couples. Great! Also a good idea: Rooftop terrace of T Fondaco dei Tedeschi near Rialto bridge. Very nice views from up there. Don't forget to register. You get a time slot of 15 minutes. It was no problem to book for the next day. Same day booking was not possible, there were no more slots available. Corona-wise it is ok, they limit it to 40 people which gives everyone enough space. Restaurant bookings were not a problem, we booked in the mornings for the respective evening and always got a table. We particularly liked Al Cantinon. We simply loved our stay and cannot wait to go again. Thanks to the Calcina team for providing the beautiful basis for a great trip!

Lovely place. Friendly, dedicated, helpfull and multilingual staff. Very clean rooms. Close to many city landmarks without being drowned in the crowd. Reasonable prices. Unique terrasse floating on the Giudecca Channel. Nice restaurant too. I couldn't recommand it more. Don't look any further : go for it!

Venice in pandemic times is a one in a lifetime, sure. I betted on a calm and serene city and i was right. But Pensione Calcina was the surprise. Little hotel, very cosy, and a suberb location for the non classic traveller. The staff is super helpful and multilingual, wich is not quite normal in Italy. Typical Venetian room, baroque if you want, but very good isolated and a normal-size bathroom !! I travelled alone and recieved a most warm welcome. The restaurant offered a reduced card in the evening but who can resist a Fegato alla Venetiana after a day walking ? It does make sense to keep this adress for oneself, but anyway...
