Stayed just for a night and a bit disappointed at the simple and old style room appointed. The bathroom is quite narrow and small, we took to having a bath at the ground floor area onsen and rotenburo. (Swapped every night, red color noren (curtain) for Women/blue color for Men). But futon and sleeping mattresses soft and cozy. The dinner was private room on the 10th floor sufficient for ryokan style food, selected sashimi, small hot pot of soft wagyu meat and vegetables and since it was for my birthday celebration my children made reservation in advance for a birthday cake which was a surprise. Hotel is located at the corner part of Kusatsu and our room on the 7th floor partly offered side views of the Kusatsu "Yubatake" (literally hot water field) oozing with sulphuric smells. Yukata (light cotton kimono) is provided and if going outside the hotel(wearing the kimono), geta (wooden clogs) for walking out side if you want to is placed near the entrance/doorway of the hotel. Breakfast is buffet style and with many choices available. Went by car and parking is 20minutes away, they have small van to ferry customers to and from the hotel and parking place. Reception staff very helpful (we forgot something in the car and had to request van to bring us to the parking and back - it was almost 7pm and the shuttle service was finished for the day still they graciously provided without additional cost). Old style elevator in use and during our stay only 1 elevator was working and it was quite slow.

Daitokan is one of the hotels situated by Kusatsu Onsen’s famous Yubatake, where almost all of Kusatsu’s happenings are. If you come to Kusatsu Onsen by public transport, you are likely drop off at the bus terminal, from where it’s a 5 minutes down slope stroll to Kusatsu Onsen’s Yubatake, hence they do not provide pick up service to and fro bus terminal. If you drive, there’s no parking here, but you can leave your car near their sister hotel’s (Kusatsu Onsen Hotel Resort) carpark, and I understand that’s the only spot where they provide free pick up service. We were received by two very well manner gentlemen at the concierge who spoke moderate English and didn’t mind briefing us about general facilities there and offering us dining recommendation. And we got a roomy 10-tatami Japanese style room, but unfortunately it wasn’t one facing the Yubatake. The room was expectedly a little dated, however, it was well equipped with tea set, Yukata, sandals, bath tub, even massage equipments for neck and back. We felt very warm inside the room despite it being early Spring, that tells how strong their heater is, and it took me a while before figuring how to switch it off, and it’s either on or off, no option in-between. Important information: NO WiFi in room. At around 6pm, hotel staff will lay the futon for you. Daitokan has its own bath houses on ground floor, alternating between male and female at the stroke of midnight, but having been to both, there aren’t much significant difference actually. There is no locker inside, only basket for you to keep your possession, so leave your valuables in your room. But there is vending machine serving free hot and cold drink inside. Daitokan draws onsen water from the nearby Yubatake, but for many other accommodations further away from the Yubatake, they may be using other onsen sources. I find the hotel’s in-house store selling many interesting items, such as local souvenirs and collectibles. In addition, one can find a game arcade from the connecting annex building next door, offering entertaining for children and young adults. Our package came with free buffet breakfast, and the restaurant on level 2 serves many varieties of Japanese cuisines. In my opinion, it’s far better than conventional international style buffet and worth the extra dollars. One thing to note for those depositing luggage upon checking out, I was told I needed to collect them around noon, I suppose that’s because they have limited storage space. Anyway, it didn’t affect me as I would have boarded the bus for the train station by then.

Overall I enjoyed m stay here. However, the heating system in each room doesn’t appear to have much consistency - on the same setting it would blow out super hot air and then quite cool air intermittently. The onsen, while beautiful, is closed 0000-0100 and again 0900-1500 which was super disappointing for those cold days you want to get up early to seize the day but relax later. Staff was friendly and accommodating to me despite my lack of good Japanese language skills. Location is great. Interior hallway floors could be updated. Supposedly had a restaurant on site but I couldn’t find it; saw several rooms that appeared to be abandoned or perhaps getting updated but with no apparent recent progress.

This hotel is in the town center and walking distance to the Bus Terminal, the Sainokawara Park and a few public onsens. The onsens in the hotel are great and the Ume dinner is delicious. The only issue with the hotel was that the bathroom is old and dirty.

This is an old hotel that has seen better days. Everything about this hotel shouts 1960s to me. Read the reviews and understand what you are in for before you make your reservation. The rooms may be dim and dated, but the futons are relatively puffy and comfortable. The attached bath may be small, but you won't need it if you can shower in comfort in the hotel's public onsen. The food is not the finest Japanese cuisine, not Washoku, but the restaurant buffet spread is good and delicious for its price. The hotel's central location may be its best advantage. For me, having experienced a full-fledged ryokan before, I chose not to splurge on luxury this time in Kusatsu Onsen. My main purpose is to enjoy the onsen, so I don't really mind the aesthetics of the hotel. Daitokan's onsen did not disappoint. In fact, we loved it so much that we used it twice on the day we checked in and again before we checked out the next day. It is well maintained and the toiletries provided are quality products. Several brands/types of lotions were available. Try them out and you can buy them from the hotel's souvenir shop if you find them to your liking with the shopping rebate* that comes with the hotel stay. *availability subject to the hotel's policy For bonding, you can have a game of table tennis or engage in some traditional games on the 2nd level, but the games are mostly worn or broken. If you come mentally prepared, you will not be disappointed. You may even be pleasantly surprised at how you enjoyed your stay here.
