We family of 4, with 2boys(7y+6y) had a Great time at Minamikaikisen. Hotel Owner Mr and Mrs Mizunosan were Great host. Owner took us walking tour to beautiful view clif with their dog:) We loved their hotsprings, hotspring has nice Sunrise, Moon, Sakura view when we visited Sakura was blooming.(Apri2nd-4th). We also really enjoyed Mrs.Mizuno’s foods, they use fresh seasonal things for their food. surprised us with taste and spice every single meal. We stayed in Japananese style room, we Loved it:-) they have a Grandpiano, my husband enjoyed to play. We did rent a car in tokyo, nice drive down to hotel, and we also did little trip to Mt.Omuro, Kawazu nanadaru waterfalls. there are many waterfalls and sightseeing places you can drive or take a train.

This was the best stay I have ever had at a hotel anywhere in the world. If I am ever fortunate enough to visit Japan again we will 100% come back to visit. The town itself is, as other reviewers described, sleepy in a charming way. It is a big relief from the hustle and bustle of Tokyo. The hiking and trails near the hotel are BEAUTIFUL with water that almost looks too blue to be real. But the hotel, and the family running it, is the most amazing part. We felt instantly at home, safe, and relaxed. The food prepared is like a 5-star restaurant (grandmas medicinal plum wine was beyond good) and the decor is quirky and fun and full of life. The hot springs were relaxing and faced the ocean and sky, tho there were also enclosed ones for days where the weather isnt as accommodating. If you are ANYWHERE near this area I would book a stay. We enjoyed our stay here more than our Ryokan in Hakone. 10/10!!!

My wife and I stayed at Hotel Minamikaikisen for only 2 nights, but we will never forget the wonderful experience we had there. We were picked up at the Jogasaki-kaigan train station by Yoshi, who owns the hotel, and he did everything he could to help us get the most out of our time there. Our room at the hotel had a view of the ocean, and was beautifully decorated and immaculate, as was the rest of the hotel, which was decorated with lovely artifacts from places that Yoshi has traveled in East Africa. The hotel has a hot spring, which one may use both indoors and on a private deck outdoors, and we did so on a cool, softly raining day, and that experience was simply sublime. The owner even adjusted the temperature of the hot spring for us (by opening doors to the outside air), because we're (apparently) more sensitive than the Japanese to the very hot temperature of the water from the hot spring. The owner's wife, Junko, is an incredible cook, and every breakfast and dinner we had at the hotel was gorgeously presented and delicious beyond measure! The only hotel staff member was very helpful with our very heavy suitcases, and even though his English was limited, he was very personable and make our stay even more enjoyable. Yoshi also took us on hikes along the beautiful, rocky Jogasaki coast, drove us to Mount Omeru and rode the cable car up with us, revised our planned train route to Narita airport, and even drove us to a different train station so that we could enjoy a faster and cheaper train ride to the airport. Because 2 fabulous meals, and hot springs, are included in the price of the room, we regard this hotel as a bargain, and couldn't recommend it more highly. Because it's only a 2-hour train ride from Tokyo, it makes a great and convenient escape from all the concrete, steel, glass, and crowds of that city.

I've stayed at a bunch of different places in Japan and Hotel Minami-kaikisen rises to the top. The location is in a sleepy, but beautiful part of Izu where I had some really great hikes along the coast (old lighthouse, suspension bridge, etc.). If you time it right, there's a really cool flea market in the train station nearby. The hotel is outstanding. Fun, equatorial themed rooms. Dinner is a wonderful, multi course gourmet meal (Junko is a classically trained chef) that was accompanied by live Jazz on the weekend. And the hosts, who have lived abroad extensively are very international friendly. But the highlight, in my opinion, is the natural hot springs. The water is fresh (not recycled like some places) and are two separate areas with indoor and outdoor tubs.

I stayed in over 10 locations recently during a 2 week trip to Japan and I have to place my experience at Hotel Minamikaikisen at the top. The hosts served incredible 7 course meals in a lovely dining area, they were gracious beyond words, the location was superb - quiet, beautiful and walking distance to the phenomenal rocky shorelines of Izu. The hot springs in the hotel were immaculate and so aesthetically wonderful. The bedroom was beautifully decorated. I would describe it as a luxury hotel at a budget price. The owners speak English very well and are able to pick you up and drop you off from the train station, if you arrange for it ahead of time. If you plan to walk, the hotel is a 15 minute walk from the station in a quaint and pretty residential area - I advise printing out the walking directions via google maps ahead of time.
