I loved this place. My son and I stayed one night. We had a Japanese room in the annex on the first floor. The futons are conveniently set up so you just need to unroll them. There is a common lounge room and kitchen with a full sized fridge. The main house has a lovely roof top area with tea fixings. Communication was clear. There's a closet where you can store your luggage if you arrive before check in. The host is warm and friendly and helpful. He drove us to the station in the morning, waiting for us since the showers had been busy. Most of the signs are in multiple languages. There are maps and restaurant info easily available. the only drawback was that our room was a bit noisy since we were on the first floor. I think I had a choice when I booked and chose it. The trade-off was that the first floor lounge area almost seemed like an extension of our room which was nice for my son, and we easily had some privacy from each other:)

i came to otaru for the ice festival in sapporo and otaru. and i stay in guesthouse harvest for three days. i really love this place. it has some "homey" experience. almost feels like you stay in a host. we eat at owners dining table, and watch television or chat with other travellers in their living room which is very comfy. Even in winter where temperature outside is minus 5 or 6, it feels warm inside. it close to otaru station, otaru canal and there is a convenience store close to it. located in a lil bit hilly area, i can see the city view and otaru sea from its living room. Otaru Guesthouse harvest is my best experience staying in a hostel. really.. if i came to Hokkaido again, i'm pretty sure will stay in this place again.

My friend and I stayed at the Harvest guesthouse in Jan'17 and used it as a base for skiing in the local area. We originally booked for 2 nights but ended up staying for a week because it was perfect for what we wanted. It's 10 mins walk from the station and has a lovely view over the town and bay. The rooms are clean and simple and there is a good common area for eating/drinking/chilling. The guy that runs it is extremely helpful and speaks decent English. He recommended restaurants and things to do locally, and was also happy to drive us into town (for free) for dinner each night. The traditional breakfasts are delicious and a bargain (400 Yen). You can also have dinner cooked for you, which is also very affordable. Overall, a great place and would highly recommend for those on a budget.

The room is tidy and clean. Peaceful neighbourhood. 7-Eleven is within 5 minutes drive away. Host is friendly and helpful. I've left a mini torchlight when I left. The host drove 5 minutes down to find me and return my mini torch. Very touched by his effort.

We originally booked for 2 nights but ended up extending it to 7 as the location was very convenient for our subsequent skiing plans that week (An hour or less drive to Kiroro, Sapporo Kokusai, Teine, Tenguyama and Asari). Our first two nights were in the Japanese style room which is quite small. Our 5 extra nights we moved downstairs into a really big Japanese style room with its own entrance and toilet - which apparently they don't advertise but it may be available if you wish to extend your stay or book directly. Staff were helpful and friendly, and were happy to drive us down into town for our evening meal or to the train station sometimes for free. Parking outside the front door was charged at 500 Yen/night. The Japanese breakfast is really good value for 400 Yen (as long as you like fish). They also have a handful of meals they can make in the evening on request which are good value - such as Ghengis Khan and Okonomiyaki. A Japanese takeaway chain less than 5 minutes walk down the road called Hotto Motto is cheap and good. Would definitely recommend and i'd probably stay here again if I come back to Otaru.
