Stunning Garden Views, very peaceful temple. The Temple is in a very convenient place in the city of Koya-san in the mountains of Wakayama Prefecture. Their room was comfortable and breakfast and dinner meals very delicious. Their morning meditation was very relaxing, informative and enlightening. The Buddhist Monks explained clearly about many aspects of Zen meditation. Highly recommend

I recently stayed one night at this monastery cum pilgrim's lodgings located in the centre of Koyasan village and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. As mentioned this is not exactly a hotel, rather is provides accommodation for pilgrims travelling through the region while visiting the many shrines in Koyasan and further afield. Foreign visitors are also welcome to experience Souji-in. Our group had traditional tatami mat rooms which were huge compared to the compact (read tiny) hotels we were used to in Osaka and Kyoto. It's very much a leave your shoes at the door sort of place, with stunningly polished floors, fabulous multi-course vegan food, plenty of alcohol if you want it, and a peaceful atmosphere. No rattling of bellboy's trolleys, little traffic and absolute silence at night. I had a room overlooking the front of the property and the road (very quiet apart from the wind blowing through the cedar forest over the road) while other in my group were lucky to have private garden views at the back. All rooms had a separate toilet and washbasin, but no shower - there are public male and female baths available. Some of the group also attended the Buddhist ceremony here at 6am - with good reports. It's an expensive place to stay but the relative solitude, lovely food, huge rooms and history made it an unforgettable experience and one that's quite unique to the region. Highly recommended.

I stayed here for two days and I think I may have been the only guest. I was upgraded to the suite, which was a lovely large room, private bath, and a pretty seating area with a garden view. The food was absolutely amazing....beautifully presented and incredibly tasty (and you can order alcohol, which was a nice surprise). The location is great. The temple areas across the road were serene and lovely and when you go early in the morning (after breakfast) you are there before the tourists. While English wasn't spoken by many of the people there, we managed to muddle through due to the kindness of the people who are working there.

My wife and I had a lovely overnight stay here. The room was very comfortable and far from basic. The vegetarian food which is their offering was beautifully presented and despite being a temple we were offered a choice of wine to purchase with our meal. The comments suggesting none of the staff who are monks spoke English wasn’t correct, some do and all made us most welcome. Attending the morning prayers at 6am was a fantastic experience and will remember for a long time.

My daughter and I stayed in Sojuin for one night. The place has an excellent location, and very clean and well-organized facilities and rooms. (We had our own toilet and a sink) The food is served at the tables with dividers. So everyone has privacy and can enjoy the meal. We really appreciated that touch. They speak enough English and are very attentive to the guests. The place is warm. This is very important because we slept on the floor and it's cold in the mountains in the winter. It isn't big and you get personal care. We were met with a nice cup of hot ginger tea and a cookie. Also for 100 yen, you can buy excellent coffee there (compare with 500 yen for a very questionable coffee in cafes.) Strongly recommend staying in Soujiin.
