This was truly a beautiful place! We were greeted very warmly by each staff member that we came accross. We were led to our room on arrival by a staff member and given a thorough tour of the hotel. We had a view of Mt Yufu and also opted for the breakfast and dinner for two nights. Every meal we had was amazing! After dinner, we hopped into one of the two private onsens and let our troubles melt away. The onsens, particularly the private ones, are in demand but most people usually stay for around 30 minutes, so you can either relax the in adjacent room with a view of their beautiful Japanese garden or go back to your room. We had a very wonderful and memorable time here. We will definitely be reccommending this to anyone we meet and will most certainly be coming back!

Was scouting for a nice ryokan to celebrate my wife’s birthday in Yufuin. Chanced upon it as I was reading reviews and we are glad to have chosen this ryokan. The ryokan offers pickup from the Yufuin station. We just had to make a call from the public phone at the station and the driver picked us up in 10mins. It was definitely a beautiful hotel with very courteous staff welcoming us. The staff could speak basic English and it was definitely sufficient for us to communicate with them. For more complex requests, we had to speak Japanese with them. All in all we are very happy with their service. The welcome drink was great as they placed us facing mount Yufu. It was really beautiful. We wrote in to request for a room with a view and they were very accommodating to arrange it for us (with a small fee). We were indeed very pleased with the room as the view we had the next morning was so good with a clear sky. Dinner was a typical kaiseki, where waves of beautiful and tasty food kept coming in courses for us to savour and enjoy. It was definitely one of our better kaiseki’s that we have had over the years visiting all around Japan. The highlight of the stay was definitely the onsen where they had 2 private baths (available at first come first served basis) which was truly gorgeous. There was also a sitting/viewing area outside of the onsen area. Loved this ryokan and would definitely come back again.

Our first time, with a group, in a traditional Japanese Inn, and it couldn't have been better. We stayed two nights, and had a selection of traditional Japanese meals and breakfasts. The 'special' meal was outstanding. The service was first class, and the amenities very good. the bedrooms had both beds and futons (excellent) and a full range of facilities. bathrooms small but adequate. It's an experience we would like to repeat.

I was really looking forward to the hospitality at a ryokan in Yufuin. I’ve stayed at other ryokans in Japan and the service was over the top. Unfortunately the service at the Yufunogo Saigakukan was very poor. The young Japanese woman who checked us in did not smile and was not friendly. We had two twin beds and an area for the tatami mats. We chose to sleep on the tatami mats because the beds were not comfortable and we were told that if we slept on the beds we would be charged an extra price ! I’ve never heard of this at a hotel. The private onsen is a nice option but it’s tiny. The public onsen was much better with a nice view of the Yufuin mountain. The dinner was very good and the Miyazaki beef was probably the best beef I’ve ever eaten. The only downside again was the service. We waited a long time between some courses and other courses were very rushed. We were never asked how we liked the food and mostly ignored. There was one lady at the front desk who was very friendly and made the experience a little better but overall the vibe was very “cold” and I would not recommend the hotel nor return.

We stayed here for two nights and had a fantastic experience. Although it’s a bit far from the bus/train station, they provide a free shuttle bus to take you to and from town. Being up the mountain a little ways, the view of the mountain and valley were beautiful. Another thing my wife liked was that they served both lunch and dinner. There were a two or three hour time frame where you could choose when to have your meals. The meals themselves were Japanese style with many different dishes throughout the courses. By the end of the meals, we were all full. The rooms were clean and had all types of amenities: TV, wifi, toothbrush, razors, hair dryer, air conditioning/heater, toilet and sink, hot water dispenser, table and floor chairs, balcony with small table, safe box and wardrobe. The only thing missing from the room was a shower. This was fine with us because we spent a lot of time in the hot springs. There were no western style beds in the room. Instead, each night during dinner the housekeeping staff would come make up a floor bed, which was very comfortable for us. The hot springs were calm and relaxing. They have two private/family hot spring rooms and separate public ones for men and women. Both types have indoor and outdoor baths with views of the mountains. The private baths are on a first come first serve basis, but the room tv shows you if the private baths are available. If not you can wait in the lounge area outside the private baths until they become available. Each of the areas has showering areas with soap, shampoo, lotion... The staff was extremely helpful and polite throughout our stay. They were courteous and always asked if we needed anything to make our stay better. Also, they were very accommodating if we wanted to change times for meals or shuttle services. If you ever get a chance to stay in Yufuin, I would suggest choosing Saigakukan. We will definitely be coming back here.
