Boutel Chulia

I was staying at Carnarvon house for a few days but had to move to a new guest house because it was booked up, it was also twice the price for a shared bathroom room. This guesthouse is no frills, has a minimalist industrial modern design and is very clean. Two bathrooms per floor. The main issue which all the reviews address and the owner warned me about is the noise. If you’re prepared for it then you can’t beat the comfort and price. I stayed in rm202 which faces the back alley and on weekends you’ll hear people going to their cars because there’s a restaurant parking lot; you’ll hear people talking. The windows aren’t insulated and the room can also get quite warm. The AC doesn’t seem to crank out super cold air but it was cool enough for sleeping. Rm205 faces the big street and gets a lot of traffic noise and sun in the afternoon and can thus get quite hot. My biggest complaint of this place is there’s no water filter. I hate using plastic and wish that they would provide free filtered water from a unit, not small water bottles which is so environmentally unfriendly. I got locked out of my room so make sure you don’t deadbolt it because the key won’t work. Also they padlock the downstairs door for security so always have that with you. The owners can be contacted by WhatsApp and weren’t around much so you’re on your own. There’s no breakfast but plenty of options to eat at nearby. I recommend this if you’re on a budget like me! If they invested in sound proof airtight windows this place would def get 5 stars!

cool nice stylish guesthouse with a superfriendly and easy going host.free water.clean sharing shower and a working aircon. beds been comfortable and overloaded with pillows.i have been sleeping on bricks in malaysia.these ones..top! can only recommend this place to others. thanks edrien

The design is pretty nice and stylish. The rooms normally don’t have the bathroom inside. The owner in never in the place but is very kind and will make sure you will feel ok and give you all the information you need. Give the taxi driver the indication correctly otherwise with the address only will be hard to find it

This place is like a hidden gem! Down a small alley in Georgetown you would miss it easily but when you find it you won’t be disappointed! Our room had a private bathroom and we were located by reception. The room is all concrete so quite dark but really cool! They have decorated it perfectly and it’s a great escape from the heat. The bathroom was our favourite part, it looked like it was outside in the jungle (pictures don’t do it justice). I loved showering under the sun or stars! Great facilities, towels, soap, shampoo, hair dryer etc. Lovely staff especially the owner! Fab location 2 mins from love lane, bars, hawker stalls, attractions, street art, 7/11! The perfect hotel for a perfect stay in Penang ❤️
