Lovely place to stay. After a long day of driving we were greeted with tea and fried bananas, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The place was simple and clean, with wonderful views of Mt Kinabalu and Paddy fields. The hosts were very friendly and really tried to make us feel as welcome as possible. They even decided, free of charge, to take us to the market in Kota Belud and get dinner. Would definitely recommend for anyone travelling on a budget or travelling as a family!

Unfortunately this visit was below expectations compared to other homestay experiences we’ve had. My family arrived after a long trip from Kk. We spent the afternoon swimming at the local river and Ismail charges 1OO ringgit. Nice enough but pricey. We return in the evening and expected that we would spend the evening having a meal and chatting with Ismail and his family ( that is a real homestay experience that we’ve had in India, Cambodia and Vietnam) but instead we were taken and dropped at some local food place in the dark in the village where little English was spoken and we barely ate because we couldn’t decipher the menu. Ismail picked us up and drive us back and we basically went straight to sleep in our bamboo hut which was lovely. We awoke in the morning and my booking clearly said breakfast included so I thought we’d get the family meal together but again nothing! The poor hospitality was very disappointing because the accommodation overlooking the rice paddy field is beautiful!

I stayed here for 2 weeks on a work away position but I cannot praise Ismail and Noman enough for the hospitality and amazing treatment I had during my stay. The facilities are clean and air conditioning provided. An amazing view of Mt. Kinabalu in the background sets for an amazing backdrop to a very unique stay. If you are passing through the area definitely stop by Ismail Homestay.

We came here initially for 2 days and finally stayed a full week. Ismail and his wife were amazing hosts, so friendly and helpful. The house is in the middle of the paddy fields with a spectacular view on the Kinabalu montain. The room was very clean. And there was a small kitchen fully equipped available to cook your own food. We would have stay longer if we could...

My husband and I stayed one night at the Homestay. We arrived to find our host Ismail ready and waiting for us with a wide welcoming smile. The village is small and very typical of the Kota Belud villages. Our rooms are in a semi detached building off the side of Ismail's house. Very simple rooms with single beds and an ensuite, no hot water but did have air conditioning. The room was very clean simple and comfortable with free drinking water provided. I would suggest for travelers staying in a home stay to be prepared for basic accommodation - in our case we loved it! Ismail took us to the Bajau horse riding, and to the Knife making. The knife making was a great experience to watch a local making the knives. We then went for a drive about 30mins to a local river for a swim. Do not be put off by the look of the rivers and streams around the village- the river that you are taken to for swimming is clean and crystal clear. Meals provided by Ismail and his family in his home were delicous fish curry, vegetables and rice dishes, and breakfast was equally was delicious and plentiful. Our host was very informative and welcoming.
