I visited the InterContinental Mauritius Resort Balaclava Fort over Christmas and New Year 2019/20 with my mother and fiancé. My mother and I have visited Mauritius once before, staying on the eastern side of the island.
The atmosphere at IC Mauritius was calm, relaxed, and friendly. The location of the resort is lovely. The gardens were peaceful with beautiful trees and plants. We all enjoyed lying by the beach on the sun-beds under the trees - a novelty for us to have trees on the beach! We also enjoyed being able to go for a long walk or run along the beach and (part of the) river path with the permission of adjacent resorts.
The staff are some of the kindest people we've ever met. They seemed to have a genuine interest in caring for guests beyond it being their job. This is quite a rare thing these days! We would like to say thanks in particular to Patrick for his daily kind attention, what an asset he is, and to Jean-Pierre who put together the most delightful Christmas concert, and entertaining and celebratory NYE show. He clearly put in a huge amount t of work. Thank you Jean-Pierre.
I should note there was a category 3 cyclone over the region just before NYE. The staff did an incredible job of managing it and everyone was kept very safe. And they managed to put on NYE as though nothing had happened - amazing.
The food in your main restaurant was delicious, and there was so much choice. We particularly enjoyed breakfast. I personally would've enjoyed a few more mild options for the dinner buffet - I'm vegetarian, and I found a lot of the vegetarian food was too hot (chilli) for me. The NYE banquet was extraordinary: thank you to the chefs for their enormous effort. We tried the other restaurants and particularly enjoyed Veda. Thank you to Varuna for her kind attention there. We enjoyed having a drink at the Sugarcane Bar with its great view, but it needs a better snack menu!
We loved the pool area but felt it was far too small, particularly since we are three adults, all over 40, and were of course sharing it with children. An expanded pool area or another bigger separate area for adults would be welcome. There is a second pool but it's very small.
Our rooms were comfortable, cool (good AC), and had lovely views, but were dated. We know this is just the reality of hotels but we all thought they were due for an upgrade. The TV signal was flakey, which was disappointing. It would've been good to have the mini-bar stocked. Alternatively, a better general store/shop at the resort would've been useful, with a selection of drinks and snacks.
The concierge service was excellent and there are lots of possibilities for tours and exploring.
Finally SPA InterContinental was very good and the therapists we saw were really excellent.
Thank you for a very nice holiday.
