The Residences is a clean place where my husband and I stayed for two weeks in January. It's a solidly built apartment building that sits opposite Trou aux Biches beach. Location wise, its a very easy, 10 min. walk to the corner where the Police station is if you look on the map, just to get your bearings. I really enjoyed staying in this area.
We stayed in a studio apartment on the ground floor it was nice. Value for money for what we paid $90 AU approx per night. Small kitchenette, enough for two, clean comfy bed, ensuite shower, clean cane furniture and flat screen tv. Also a ceiling fan and a verandah opening out onto a grass area, if you like to eat outside, its ideal. There were white tiles on the floor. It was neat and tidy. The place really is nice. Much more than budget style I would say. Oh and free wifi, but a little slow.
We cooked our own eggs for breakfast, made toast and cereal and it was fab. We could get up whatever time we wanted. Then we would walk over the road to the beach. If you walk across the road and go left you'll see a lane in between houses ts much quicker on this lane, about 3 mins. If you walk outside and go to the right its a little longer, also via a sandy lane between houses.
For lunch we bought fresh french type bread and fantastic brie, crackers and wine, olives, etc. all from Popo supermarket, located two doors up from the apartment. For dinner we could walk outside and there were at least a half dozen nice restaurants in the area. We especially liked Souvenir restaurant on the corner opposite the Police station. There is also a tour shop there. We did a tour on a catamaran on the East coast to Isle de Cerf. Wonderful island, lovely clear water, but pity about the weather. January a bit rainy and cloudy, but we still got a tan! Unbelievable as the sun is that strong.
Beach at Trou aux Biches is lovely, white sand, very clear calm water (Jan.), some coral near where the shore meets the water and some also in the water. If you walk along the beach in a northerly direction there is less coral and rocks in the water and along the shoreline. I loved this beach and when I go back to Mauritius I would stay in this area and go to this beach.
The manager is very friendly and helpful and is there every day except Sunday. He explained how we could go to Port Louis by bus and to the Bagatelle Shopping centre. Also it was not difficult and we liked the bus ride. Almost every day we also got the bus into Grand Bay, we loved doing that, easy 10 min or so ride and very cheap a little more than $1 AU per person into Grand Bay. Quiet town, some restaurants around. There is one area in Grand Bay where they have a nice cafe/restaurant where you can sit right by the water and enjoy the view. We sat there quite a few afternoons with cocktails and snacks just admiring the view and the boats. The shops located near the restaurant that overlooks the water in this area are also nice/trendy shops. There is also a supermarket that you can walk to, it is massive. There is also a fantastic ice cream/gelato and coffee place outside the supermarket.
Anyway, we loved Mauritius and would definitely go back, we would also choose an apartment over a resort. You can buy what you want from the supermarket for breakfast and lunch and go out for a nice dinner at night. Very easy to get around on your own. Buses are easy to navigate. People are friendly and helpful. In Trou aux biches and in Grand Bay and even in Port Louis. You don't need the resorts to book tours, in Grand Bay they have heaps of tour shops and they pick you up from wherever you are staying. We also went to the zoo, the Gardens and Cap Malhereux etc.. Organised that with a driver who we got from the local tour shop in Trou aux Biches. The guy there is really nice and polite and helpful. We also hired a bike and drove around, we went to Pereybere and back and looked around Trou aux biches and beyond. Loved Trou aux biches area the best.
Anyway, if you come to Mauritius and are looking for a clean apartment that is extremely well located and everything you need for a self catering holiday then this is a really good place to stay. I'm sure we'll be back, but not in rainy season.
