We were a family of 6 + 2 children aged 5 and 2 that stayed for a week in March. Unfortunately it poured with rain most of the time, and the hotel had plenty of roof leaks - presumably why it is closing for refurbishment - but it didn't stop us from having a great time. The service was generally very good, and the food, for a big hotel, was excellent. Special mention must go to the chefs who made extra effort to accommodate the gluten free member of our group. We ate at all the restaurants, and we really didn't have a bad meal. The buffet was the least preferable option, but even there everyone could get a good meal and it accommodated for all.
The guys at the boat house were helpful with the water skiing and added to the atmosphere. Snorkelling in Blue Bay was excellent, and even if you just went off the beach there was plenty to see and enjoy.
The hotel is very large and spread out - we stayed near the Sirius restaurant which was the quieter end of the hotel. We have stayed at Beachcomber Victoria previously, and in comparison the food and water sports are better at Shandrani, but the kids club at Victoria was better, and Victoria felt like a smaller hotel.
The golf course - a pitch and putt - is a welcome addition (although the first 2 holes were flooded out!)
A lot has been written about being close to the airport, but I think it is an advantage for Shandrani - the transfer is only 10 minutes, and the +- 10 planes that fly overhead per day is really not an issue at all
