Not a 5 star, not an Amrath in the sense of the fabulous Amsterdam Amrath - it was very strange indeed. Very lengthy wait to check- in. Very slow service on the terrace (we waited 45 minutes to be served on the first day). We didn't try breakfast - it's pretty dispiriting to eat off cheap catering tables without cloths (though maybe that was a Covid measure). Surprised to see suggestions that the minibar was free (reception said it wasn't though we never found out how much it was because the requested price list was never delivered.) It feels like a hotel that was rebuilt on the cheap despite its famous history. It's in a great position, it has a pool so if you can get a good deal, maybe worth a punt.

Such a shame - room was small, smelled like mold and the floor was wet. the beach is phenomenal, the food is good, service ok. it has gorgeous parts but also like the owners ran out of money and dont want to work on it anymore. indian restaurant is amazing. stay one night if you get a good price, but there are other places to stay for better experience.

To be honest we expected more from Scheveningen’s top hotel, despite the bad ratings here. It all started before we even got there when they sent us the booking details of someone else (wrong name and date.) I called to get it rectified but they did not apologise nor explain. I then booked a massage and a pedicure. We got a call immediately after saying it was not possible and we had to have them at different times. After some back and forth we agreed. Later on, they claimed we had booked each of them twice and tried to double charge us for their mistake. More on that later. We got to our room, I took one step in there and walked straight back out. It smelt of sewage, was freezing cold, tiny and had no bathtub. I went back to reception and asked for another room. This was marginally better, had a side sea view and a bathtub but it was nowhere near the 20 – 25 m2 described on the internet. At best it was around 16m2. There was also a strong sewage smell. A 5 star has to have 4 lamps in the room (there were 2). The walls were bare. It was very sparse. I have seen better 3-star rooms. We ended up having to stay another night in Scheveningen so I found the best rate on their website and thought it would be easier to book another night at reception. Down I went and was told it would be more than that by 20 Euros. I told them the price on the internet was lower. They countered by saying I was clearly looking at Booking.com. I showed them my phone and that it was their own website and not Booking.com. The staff member went back and forth to management and in the end, they agreed to let me have the room for the price on the internet (big concession!) I had to spell out the price exactly. Upon arrival at the spa, as mentioned above, they had double booked me and wanted to charge me double. We spent 20 minutes discussing this which was not relaxing. The staff there are very nice and explained that they had a new system. Also, when we were there, the door opening system went down so there are clearly some internal problems. Also, when we checked in, the staff seemed to be laughing at some internal joke which seemed quite insulting as I was not sure if they were laughing at some of the guests. All in all, the location is a 5* and the public areas are too. The spa area is nice but call to make an appointment. If you are fine with a tiny, 3-star room and frankly weird service the you will be fine here. We were disappointed with the hotel but not with Scheveningen. It is almost like they feel they do not have to try because of their fabulous location.

In a nutshell this is a badly run, badly maintained, 3 star at best hotel, but well located right on the beach. In more details. We booked online through a well known hotel booking website. Before we had checked in, we were already called by hotel staff saying that had not received our payment. We had to send them a scan of our bank transactions to prove the contrary ! At check out they still asked us to pay (more on that later). Obviously the IT system is not working properly. Then at check-in there is obviously a lack of check-in booths because even during Covid times you have to queue ... . Parking was another issue. They offer parking in front of the hotel (for a hefty 30 euro a day), but the staff insisted I tried to park on a spot which obviously was too small for my car, after seeing that it was indeed impossible I had to reverse through pedestrian traffic for 100m to another spot. Then the rooms : typical business like very small room. TV does not offer the « good » Cable Channels (which appear as scrambled ...) and the internet prevents you (or is not good enough) from streaming Netflix ... ! Then we wanted to take a shower but the tap was stuck on boiling water temperature ! We called reception and they sent someone who could only confirm that it was not working. Since we could not change rooms (our kids were already sleeping), he said that his manager (who was only in the next day will make a gesture at check out). When we checked out they pretended they knew nothing about this and about some discussions finally offered the car parking for free. In conclusions, hotels like this are a thing of the 20th century with no place in today’s world. We wanted to help the hotel business by staying there, but for this one it deserves to die with the virus ... .

We had planned to celebrate our wedding at the Kurhaus in November but all gatherings got cancelled due to Covid just a few days before our set date. We booked a mini honeymoon at the hotel instead and the staff, especially Mariska were super friendly and accommodating to all our requests. We were upgraded to a suite, we're given early check in and late check out and were able to have a photo session at the hotel. Thanks to Mariska and her team we were still able to make the most of our special day.
