Best Western Klingenberg Hotel

The hotel is located in an old industrial town, but at the water's edge with a very good view out the fjord. The rooms are clean, but basic. The restaurant had very good food, and the service was good.

Whilst the hotel facilities are progressively being brought up to the 21st century standard, the rooms are seemingly being preserved as a forecoming piece of national heritage. That’s all charming until you realise you are being charged a four-star hotel rate for a glorified motel room atop a gloomy pizzeria (which the receptionist was proud to say is the only ‘restaurant’ in town). The breakfast was okay nevertheless and got us on our jolly way to the next step of our travel where we rejoiced at not having to look at a parking lot outside the window any longer. We won’t be posting pictures of the stains throughout the room and bathroom for we believe the above description should be self-explanatory. How this place was fully booked when we visited remains a mistery.

Very nice staff, spacious and stylish common areas, fireplace, very good dinner and breakfast. Beautiful view. Spacious and satisfactory room. Clean. Only minus was a too small bathroom. Electric car charger next to hotel. Well worth a visit.

We really liked the smiling staff at arrival and enjoyed the large room (326), being big enough for 3 persons. We also enjoyed the nice location by the lake. But eating dinner at the restaurant is the main reasons for giving only a 2 star rating. After having ordered our food, we waited more than 1 hour before it was served - this despite we ordered the same dish (3 x lam). In addition the portion was extremely small and not at all enough food to satisfy our hunger. Very bad restaurant experience dispite we took the most expensive dish (395 NOK). In addition the extremely expensive beers (125 NOK for an ordinary draught beer) just made our dissapointment even worse. The breakfast was too basic (no cheese and only toast bread)

The welcoming was not friendly, even in covid times it’s possible to do much better than this. Especially the hand written “Hold avstand” sigh felt unnecessary and the breakfast wasn’t up to scratch. Room was big but needed a renovation, shower hose leaking. Not many alternatives around, but stay somewhere else if you can.
