We have just returned from an 11-night stay at the Alvor Baia Hotel. It was a nice hotel but not necessarily a 4-star Platinum as sold to us. The hotel lobby is huge, bright and very clean. The reception staff are very welcoming. In fact, all the staff from the bar staff to kitchen staff, cleaners to animation team are all really lovely and welcoming.
The rooms were huge with a large balcony, perfect for a family of 4 like us. The towels were changed, and beds made every day. However, the floors of the room and balcony were not swept or mopped once during our stay which was a bit disappointing. The rooms do not provide tea and coffee making facilities, so after looking at other reviews, we decided to take a kettle.
The food was great, lots of choices, usually 4 choices of meat dishes and 4 fish dishes. Sadly, it was let down by the temperature. The food was only ever lukewarm. I noticed that they weren't using hot plates, but heat lamps instead. I am surprised none of us got ill on holiday. I also noticed that there were barely any vegetarian choices, they even put ham through the scrambled eggs in the morning and many of the salads contained fish. So maybe not a great choice of hotel if you're a vegetarian. Drinks were the usual local drinks, soft drinks and wines. The local beer, Super Bock was really nice to taste.
The entertainment team were fantastic and a highlight of my daughter’s holiday! They carried out loads of activities during the day, crafts, games and quizzes. She loved it! They were really engaging with all the children. They also did Mini Disco in the evenings at 8:30 which all the kids, young and old enjoyed. After mini disco, there was usually a singer which was quite nice, but we had usually gone to bed by then as we had a little one with us. The music went off around 23:30 so you could get a fairly good sleep if you were situated near the bar area.
The grounds of the hotel were lovely. The gardens were kept beautifully. There was a long path that ran round the top of the hotel on a hill, which most of the parents putting their babies and toddlers to sleep took advantage of.
The hotel ran a free bus service to the beach which ran quite regularly throughout the day. The beach is stunning, loads of space, lots of beds to hire, some areas with hammocks and wind shields which is great for the little ones to relax out of sun. They cost around 15-20 EUROS for the day.
The kids play park was also a great hit with the children. It gave them a chance to have a break from the water and something else to do in the evenings once the mini disco had ended. We did notice that the black floor tiles were in quite a mess. There were huge gaps between them, so the children kept tripping up on them. This is something that needs addressing by the hotel. Next to the park was a huge green which some of the older kids loved playing football on. The grounds of the hotel, including Alvor town itself is very hilly. So, it’s not somewhere I would recommend to visit if you had mobility issues.
We were also required to pay for extras, such as ice-creams and the safety deposit box. For a 4-star hotel, you would expect to at least have these included. That was a bit of a let-down.
The pool was huge. It ran right across from one side of the hotel to the other so even though the hotel was very busy, there was plenty of room to swim without getting bashed over the head by a floaty! The one thing that let the pool down and the hotel, and what many other customers agree with me, was the cleanliness of the pool area. The floors were never washed down so you would see spilt drinks and ice-creams from the day before. We usually had sunbeds towards the back, near the toilet area and there were plastic cups, cigarette butts and ice-cream wrappers all strewn across the gardens that was never picked up by the cleaners. The tables were never wiped down either as we would see the same ice-cream/drinks stains from the day before. This let the hotel down massively. Also, during a pandemic, you would expect the beds to be cleaned or sprayed each day. This was not the case. So, you’d know you would be lying on a bed that had been sweated on by someone else the day before. The cleanliness of the hotel is impeccable, I just wish they had carried this on outside so you could have a clean area to lay the next day. We took anti-bac wipes with us so were able to clean our area before laying down, but this should not be our responsibility in a 4-star hotel.
During a pandemic, I think the hotel was doing it’s best, but the cleanliness of external areas definitely needs addressing.
