We stayed in a couple of Pousadas during our travel through Portugal, but I must say that this Hospedaria stole our hearts!
The place is in the middle of nowhere. Said to be only 7 Km from Braga, there is but one signage of the Convent in the road through the village. A tall column, open ground and a sprawling monastery compound is what you see at first sight...all deserted. Go in through the door and we were in front of warm receptionist Liliana.
The Hotel has only 9 rooms. These rooms used to be cells and hence are not big but well designed with ample use of glass. ..not just in the rooms but also in the sliding doors opening up to the monastery and courtyards. No dinner unfortunately possible that day at the Hotel since the dining room staff were given an off....Liliana helped us out by placing an order with takeaway joints for Pizza, salads etc..which we had in the empty drawing room/lounge.
A visit to the monastery and church is included in the cost...and I had a great time walking around the monastery for more than an hour...past the vineyards of the monastery and the wonderful cloisters with fine Azulejo tiled corridors, the church was incredibly beautiful.
Breakfast was wonderful, perhaps the best we had during our Portuguese holidays...loved the smell and taste of what felt like handmade freshness.
Staying here really was one of the highlights of our holiday in Portugal.
