We were due to visit on April 11th 2020 but obviously we were unable to. Villa Nautilus have refused to refund my payment for the room we had booked. I do not want to move my booking sometime into the future thank you, I just want my money back.

I very much enjoyed my stay at the Villa Nautilus. The hotel was very peaceful, away from the busy tourist areas of Alvor. The rooms were very smart and I had a balcony with a beautiful view of the cliffs and sea. Knowing that tea is not as important to the Portuguese as it is to me, I took my own teabags, but I was relieved to see there was a kettle. The room had everything else I needed as well - a comfortable bed, big wardrobes, a safe, and a large walk-in shower. The hotel breakfast area was quite small, with tables packed very closely together, but there was a good range of food and plenty to go around. The rest of the hotel was very spacious, although I didn’t see anyone using the large communal seating areas. As you would expect in October, no one was really using the rooftop pool area (I tried and the pool was freezing!). I imagine it would get busy up there in the height of summer though. The slightly remote location may not suit everyone but the hotel was exactly what I was after and I would happily stay here again.

The website uses the word “hotel” but this is definitely not a hotel! It is quite remote which would be fine if there were facilities at the Villa but apart from breakfast and a very small bar attached to reception there is nothing. It was originally a private villa and has massive public areas with artworks and sofas and even a grand piano but we never saw anybody using these. The rooms are spacious and very well appointed (lovely shower, bidet, fridge and kettle) although the first room we were given didn’t have a balcony, looked onto a paved area and was baking hot. It would have been a nice touch if the air con had been out on prior to our arrival. The lady who showed us to the room (along walkways and outside paths!) just opened the room and left us struggling with the air con remote. I wasn’t happy with the room so had to return to Reception ( no internal phones) and was told they were fully booked but after some keyboard tapping a ground floor room with terrace onto lawn overlooking the sea was found. Mind you it was an eye watering €75 extra per night ! No information packs in the rooms or in Reception (other than a map), nothing to say there was a private beach or lovely walks to other beaches, cafes and a super restaurant Canico. We found all these out by accident. Reception had told us the nearest restaurants were a taxi ride away in Alvor. Breakfast was a shambles on all three mornings we were there. Despite the acres of public “lounge” areas breakfast was in a tiny room opposite reception. The rows of tables were so close together that when one of the more portly guests was seated in the middle he couldn’t get out without one of us moving. It was buffet style but too small for the number of guests and everything ran out constantly. Guests had to clear tables before they could use them. There was only one member of staff trying to restock the buffet and clear tables which was impossible despite her very best efforts. Breakfast was from 8.30 to 10.30 but although we tried 8.45, 9.30 and 10.15 it was the same every morning. The flashy Nespresso machine was inadequate for the number of guests, no instructions how to work it and was constantly breaking down. On one occasion the receptionist was called in to try to rescue the situation! When I complained to the receptionist about the situation she said she was well aware of the situation but couldn’t do anything about it as that as down to the manager. Who wasn’t available! As mentioned in other reviews the swimming pool is tiny and just on a flat roof with about 8 sun beds when we were there but it looks over the most stunning view. What a waste! This could be a fantastic place to stay but it needs an owner/manager who understand the needs of guests and has some vision.

A very peaceful hotel set in a very scenic part of the Algarve. We had a lovely bedroom with large bathroom, walk in shower, good sized balcony. Pool area is nice with a few sun beds. We spent quite a lot of time by the pool and had it to ourselves most of the time. Alvor town is a short taxi ride away or about 40 mins walk. Plenty of restaurants to choose from. There are a few nice restaurants near hotel as well, 10 minute walk. We will definitely be coming back here soon.

The room was a good size, clean and modern, the bed was small and not really comfy and the noise of the swimming pool pump going all night didn’t help. The temp of the shower was tepid quite often and the shower head kept twisting and spraying sideways not downwards. The overall design of the hotel was very strange with lots of up and down walkways that were partly indoors and then outdoors for a bit and then they had these huge lounges that no one seemed to use. The roof terrace could have been nice but that was literally a large flat roof with a very small swimming pool with only 8 sun beds and nothing else. BUT THE BIGGEST LET DOWN of all was the location! it was on the top of the cliff surrounded by dusty rocky scrubland, luckily it didn’t get dark too early. As for the private beach, that must have only been accessible to mountain goats! Okay we’re not the most athletic people, were both in our 60’s but it took a good 20 - 25 minutes to get to any restaurant or accessible beach. The nearest restaurants were on the beach and more like cafes, we were told there were some nice restaurants in the town or harbour but It would have taken about 45 minutes walking to get to them but who wants to go on a 45 minute hill climb after having dinner and taxis were very expensive. With the lack of amenities, the location and the standard of the breakfast I feel the price we paid for our weeks stay was extremely high and I would not consider staying there again.
