We were going to the ballet and did not wish to drive home late so we booked this hotel. It is a classic 1920’s hotel with a rickety lift and a cold room. Nevertheless, it was well worth staying at for its ambiance, the nice staff, and the excellent breakfast. Not expensive, well positioned near the Coimbra A station if you need that, and with great restaurants and shops not too far away.

Our group loved this hotel. It is central, overlooks the river, is charming and old-fashioned, and has the best buffet breakfasts. If you don't mind a bit of tattiness, it's worth it for period charm, huge baths, balconies for sunsets, and for its handy position in the charming town. Easy access to the ancient university and library, and to restaurants, bars and shopping, adds to the convenience.

We recently stayed at the Hotel Astoria, rated 3 stars (?? why) and found it to be bare bones as compared to modern hotels. Be prepared to do your relaxation in the wonderfully decorated room off the main lobby, it is quite comfortable. There is a breakfast dining room on the ground floor. The room we occupied had a TV, phone, wardrobe and 2 built in desks. One easy chair was located in the converted balcony (would rather have the spacious open air balcony) with one rather antiquish chest of drawers. This hotel would be worth more stars rated by us if it was restored to its original beauty and the glory of the art deco of the 1920's-30's. There was an interesting antique shower apparatus with plenty of hose length for showering and was enclosed with a shower curtain that surrounded one side and one end of the 6 or 7 foot long tub. If it had claw feet, they were enclosed with a rather attractive white tile and ceramic rope border and the bathroom walls were of white ceramic tile for a very clean and tidy look. Also, for convenience, there was an electric plug seperate from the hair dryer. My husband wasn't able to use it as he has a balance problem. We didn't ask for a handicap room because we wanted a room facing the river. There were 2 glasses, shampoo packets, 2 small soaps, 2 hand towels and 2 hand towels as expected. The room was heated with a modern machine located high up and under the 10, or higher, foot ceiling eliminating the use of the antique radiator. A pretty antique chadelier hung above the twin beds seperated by a platform for the phone. The beds were clean and quite comfortable and the room was clean and warm and had one small picture on the wall.

Very small but compact room. No tea and coffee making options, no refrigerator. Can get very hot in the rooms. Good breakfast. No room service. Handy location. Bed small and uncomfortable. No wifi in room. Overall a very basic room.

Time has passed this hotel by. While there is a sense of history and some cool art deco stuff, the rest of hotel has not been well maintained. The furniture is shabby, the carpets are threadbare and there just isn't much polish or freshness around. The real disappointment is the room situation. We had a great spot, a larger room on the third floor overlooking the river. While the room was quite spacious, and the balcony very cool, the beds were not very comfy. The pillows were oddly thin and lumpy, and the bathtub wasn't great at keeping water in. What's worse, the WiFi was spotty in the lobby and didn't work at all in the rooms. I'd love to see this place restored to its former glory, as the location is awesome and there are some cool details everywhere. Until then, however, it's a pass from me.
