The old monastery hotel is on a hill which dominates the surrounding flat lands which are predominately arable agriculture, dissected by the picturesque river
My welcome was efficient but lacking any warmth or kindness. I was allocated a room facing east, not great to see the sun
On pushing, I was given a west facing room perfect to watch a sunset on the horizon. Question, when there are so few guests why are staff not told to give the few they do have, a super room?
The eventual room was functional with a very small double bed. Decor was dark wood and grey. Not welcoming.
The bed was awful. It was rock hard. Most uncomfortable. I woke many times and in the morning back ache. Second question, when will hotel owners realise that a good quality bed is a fundamental necessity, and that cheap bed and mattress will discourage guests from staying longer or returning? A good sleep is the point of a hotel after all
The bathroom was very dated, which was handy as it suited the brown water coming from the bath taps. Not encouraging after a long day. I tried the shower ; it worked as long as you kept holding the button down all the time. Not easy
Down for drinks before dinner, in a bare room with one settee and two stools. No atmosphere at all. I waited 30 minutes and no one was to be seen anywhere as I got progressively colder. Still, dinner should be better.
Which it wasn’t. The dining room is like one of those big open cold rooms under a church. Lights bright enough for an operating theatre. A complete disaster of an atmosphere. Question three , why don’t hotel owners try to create a welcome and warmth with soft lighting and some soft furnishings at least?
Fresh vegetable soup was tasteless. Awful. Followed by cod with tomatoes and cheese on top. Well it was hot but apart from that it was inedible. Clearly precooked. But I was so hungry that I hate half.
The only bright spark was the waiter who seemed genuinely embarrassed. He tried.
It’s hard to be a fair judge about a hotel when there are so few guests on a cold November evening. But I was shown not an ounce of friendliness or care. A depressing stay in a depressing place with staff who didn’t seem to have any interest in their jobs.
The worst hotel I have stayed at in years.
My advice ? Go somewhere else.
