1) We booked the Lagar double room for one night. On arrival we reported the sheets felt damp and these were changed. The room was dark and gloomy despite the bright August day. Coming back to the room late at night we found the new sheets were damp - absorbing the damp from the room. There is no ventilation in the ensuite and this may not help. As it was too late to go elsewhere we slept in the car. In the morning, the manager was not sympathetic and just said the house is old and cold. We are used to staying in old houses but that doesn't mean the rooms are damp. Maybe the other accommodation at the hotel is better. 2) Some of the wiring in the bedroom looked dodgy. 3) The two bedside lamps did not work. 4) The pool looked dirty - you could not see the bottom. 5) On checking out we were told payment was cash only and when we asked for a receipt we were told this would be sent by email. This has not yet arrived.

But for a special treat for a couple try the Mohina or windmill. It’s a walk up a trail from the main buildings and pool, or a 1 minute drive up the road. You are totally secluded and have your own cozy hilltop domain including a BBQ and separate outdoor covered seating area. If you’re scared of tight spiral staircases it’s not for you. A great “ au natural” time. Views into downtown and the castle are great. Worth the price.

We (two grandparents, two parents and a 2 year old) spent our first nights in Portugal at Quinta Rio Alcaide after an easy drive from the Lisbon Airport. It was perfectly peaceful and a great starting location for day trips. The grounds were even more beautiful than in the pictures - orange trees, river, water wheel, wisteria and a million other flowers and plantings! Communication was easy and Fernanda provided everything we needed for our granddaughter.

An incredible country villa. Every morning we got to wake up, open the windows and soak in the beautiful hillside estate around us. The grounds are massive and absolutely beautiful complete with olive trees, lemon and orange trees, wild herbs, pine trees and 2 white horses walking through the grounds. The estate sits on a river complete with a spillway that apparently turns in to a waterfall during the winter melt-water season. Staff was friendly and helpful, the inn itself was clean and well furnished but still maintained an old world feel. I felt like I had stepped back in time 150 years. I will stay here again, it's a real hidden treasure.

Wow - what a place, so tranquil and relaxing. The beautiful grounds here are filled with all sorts of fruit trees and olive trees. The stunning old paper factory (now turned into rooms) has an old rusted water wheel at the side, and gorgeous flowers growing up the walls. The room that we stayed in was large and spacious and had its own fire place which was useable in colder months. The owner showed us around more beautiful rooms on our last day, we'd have been happy to stay in any of them. We were lucky enough to be the only ones there on our last day, and had the pool to ourselves. It was in a lovely sunny area of the grounds, where we could relax and read on the sunbeds in the middle of nature and peace and quiet. The owners were kind and said we could check out whenever we wanted, as no-one was expected in our room that night. The owner even showed us some of the plants in the garden and told us which we could use to make tea...which we did and it was delicious! I should also mention, the bed was extremely comfy. We slept so well! We are early risers, but due to the tranquility of this place and the comfort of the bed, we slept for hours! We would definitely come back here for longer. We were very sad to leave.
