Our GPS could not locate this hotel. Locals tried to help us by entering the address details on gps but to no avail , so we drove around until we saw Sandeman (the hotel pics showed Sandeman in their slides). It is located on a quaint street , away from the tourist bustle.
Management is present for morning and afternoon, but not at night. Excellent communication skills in French and English.
Driving and parking in D’ouro or Porto requires nerves of steel , and your gps can get you in trouble. Parking in front of hotel is for residents. Hotel referred to one parking area not too far and at low cost of $7e /day. We parked the car and left it there for the duration of our stay.
Many local restaurants in the alley and the two we tried were good and reasonable. Dined in restaurants lined along the river and food was excellent but a bit costlier, but the view of Porto was to die for ! Per couple we averaged $32 euros, including wine, soup, main course, and dessert/coffee. Of course you will get a complimentary glass or two of Porto at end of your meal. Personally enjoyed the small joints better than the tourist restaurants, personalized service with local foods.
Be prepared to walk uphill and downhill everywhere you go. Handicapped people stay away...cardiac hill awaits you at every corner. The cobblestone can get treacherous dry and slippery when wet. Drivers are very cooperative with pedestrians and will brake as soon as you enter the crossings. You can easily lose your sense of direction because the streets crisscross all over the place, and finding the names of the street is not evident. Getting lost was part of the fun (lol).
The hotel breakfast is freshly prepared for you every morning , and even though only a few guests showed up, the choices were plentiful every time. The reception area is shared with the breakfast space. This hotel is not big , and the renovations going on constrains the available common space. Very personal service by all...
So I expected a hotel on a busy street, larger than what it actually is, busy with clients, just a number amongst other guests, but got the opposite !
