I waited a few months before writing this review, I thought I needed the time to reflect and see if my disappointment was over exaggerated and might fade. But it hasn't. So here is my very real review of Lion Sands River Lodge... I agonized for weeks over which of the amazing Sabi lodges to choose for this once in a lifetime trip. I had chosen Sabi Sands particularly for its density of leopards, and looked forward to multiple sightings over my 4 day trip. With all of its glowing reviews, I thought that I couldn't go wrong with choosing Lion Sands River Lodge. Well, all I can say is that I left really disappointed, and wanted to share some real and honest opinions from myself and the guests I took with me. With all the positive reviews about this lodge, I wanted to let people know that not every trip here is so amazing, and maybe look at a different property. First and most important, I want to mention the really pathetic game viewing, which sadly was no better than we had experienced on our self drives through the Kruger. Out of 6 game drives, we saw only 1 leopard for about a minute. This, despite us letting the ranger know that we had specifically come to Sabi Sands for the Leopard viewing. Look, I know that game viewing is all about luck and it all depends on what animals are actually on the property at the time of one's visit, however, other groups that were there during our stay had multiple leopard sightings, with some even getting to sit and enjoy a mother with 2 cubs. We were left wondering if our ranger was purposefully not taking us to these sightings!? Leopards were not the only animal lacking from our game drives.... Some of the game drives there was little more to see than implala, and one morning game drive I actually fell asleep out of boredom! The Lion Sands reserve itself does not have any amazing views and outlooks, so if there are no animals to see, it feels like you are driving in circles. Despite our 6 game drives of 3 hours each, we actually did not even get good sightings of all the big 5. We only saw elephant & buffalo once at a great distance on the other side of the river. Add to that, only 1 lion sighting and 1 leopard sighting and I think you get the picture that these were game drives any lodge in the Sabi Sands should be embarrassed of. Anyway, that's the story on the game viewing.... Now to the lodge itself... Really, so much of it is so beautiful and the interior design is really modern and luxurious, but during our stay we were super disappointed to arrive to ugly, empty ponds throughout the lodge. It really did not hold the same atmosphere wihtout the pieces of water which dominate the lodge design :( As if that couldn't get worse, halfway into our stay they began to fill the ponds with water again using a very noisy diesel motor to pump water from the river. Imagine paying a daily rate of R5500 only to be lying at the pool wanting to relax with a noisy diesel motor drowning out any sounds of the bush? This motor went ALL day, throughout breakfast & lunch. My group and other guests kept asking the lodge to turn the motor off, but within a few minutes it would be turned on again. In terms of other maintenance issues, we also had our A/C break down one night and spent a sleepless night in 35degree heat :( It got "fixed" the next day but definitely was still not working well compared to our other room. To add insult to injury, when we came to checking out after our stay, the lodge then also had the cheek to try and charge us for a tonic water from the in room mini bar which we never had, We told them that we don't even drink tonic, but they really put up a fight and accused us of lying! Really More Family, you are going to try and accuse your guests, who have spent 10s of thousands of Rands to be at your lodge, of stealing a bloody tonic water??? I can't tell you that I was very impressed by the end of my trip, even 3 months on, I am just really disappointed that I spent a decades worth of my savings for the 3 of us to not get the trip of a lifetime we deserved. Thumbs down Lion Sands, you made me really sad :(

This was a truly exceptional and memorable experience, made even more so my our guide Quinton and butler Solly. We experiences amazing viewings of wild dog, leopard and lion. The care taken over us to make this a special trip was of another levels. We would highly recommend this exceptional lodge and its staff for all safari lovers.

I fell in love with Lion Sands. As many people do (I am sure). River Lodge is absolutely exquisite. Beyond what the pictures depict - the pictures just don't do the Lodge justice. Every single detail is meticulous. Both from a visual perspective but also (more importantly) from a personal perspective. I could not find a single fault. Honestly. From the decor in every single area (from the reception, to the common living areas, to the Gallery, patio, fire pit, restaurant, pool area and our exquisite room), to the linen, towels and amenities (like the shampoo and conditioner, body wash and body lotion) in the bedrooms. The fragrances in the rooms and throughout the lodge - not too overpowering but enough to make you feel like you are in a luxurious space. The ponds, the statues! I was in awe and each space I looked at was a feast for the eyes. So much detail, but not overwhelming. And absolutely breathtaking! But our experience was more than just how beautiful the lodge was. I fell in love with the people. From our first dealing with Liesl Bisschoff in the concierge department (who had to deal with my many emails and requests, all whilst being friendly, helpful, supportive and professional) to Jayde Lee at the Lodge (who also had to deal with my many emails and requests and also remained professional, friendly and reassuring) to Ty Higman (who we had the pleasure of dealing with whilst at the Lodge - he literally made our experience better and more amazing than we ever could have imagined. He is an incredible manager and a true asset to the More team) to Nadia who was full of spunk and was just an absolute pleasure to deal with. Our incredible guide Werner - who was not only wonderful to be around but his knowledge was incredible. He was funny, accommodating and just the kind of guy you want to hang around with, Marco (a guide still in training) who found a chameleon for us in the pitch dark - such an amazing experience and such a sweet guy. And Mendrew an incredible tracker, who made the game drive experience that much more special. Our butler Ben literally made our entire stay a breeze - nothing was too much for him, everything was a pleasure and everything was taken care of. We felt so well looked after. Chris and James in the restaurant were also always happy to help and ensure that whatever Ben couldn't do (which wasn't much) they did. A truly remarkable team. Stacey the head chef who not only met me on arrival but listened to all my dietary requirements (and was not phased by a single one of them) and went out of her way to make sure I not only ate (what I could eat) but that every mouthful was delectable - her duck was one of the best duck meals I have ever ever had! Wow. She also constantly checked in on me - I felt like I was at my moms home being well and truly cared for! Meagan and Theodora in the spa have healing hands and went out of their way to ensure our treatments were better than amazing. They were truly out of this world! Happy and Nico who escorted us back to our rooms - the friendliest most wonderful gentlemen who made us feel so safe. Every single person we came into contact with (even if I don't remember all their names) were truly the cream of the crop. The best of the best. And I miss them all already. Funny to say that - I only knew them all for a few days. The fact that some of the More collective team members have been with the More family for 15 years and more speaks volumes for how their employees are treated. How they are looked after. And it radiates off of each team member who are more than happy to go above and beyond. The value in that is immeasurable. And I could sense it from every single person I came into contact with. And that is a very rare thing. We also managed to see the Big Five almost every day. On the last day we were blessed enough to see a pack of 19 wild dogs!!! My favourite animal and a very emotional experience. This lodge is sincerely out of this world! My words just don't do it justice. I wish they could. It is a place that needs to be experienced. It will change your life. In all the best ways! It is not the most affordable lodge in the Sabi Sands Reserve. I must be honest. There are lodges that are more affordable. But this lodge is worth absolutely every single cent. From now on I will put money away every month just to be able to go back. You literally feel like a celebrity, like a Queen for your stay. And I am not sure about you, but I could use that every now and again. But during COVID they have offered some great deals and local South Africans should take advantage of them (if they can)! I cried when I left!

Breathtaking experience from the More collection. Every detail is carefully planned and well executed. Even the bathrooms at the main lodge has an excellent view. The game drives .... wow... just amazing. The picturesque scenery, the knowledge of our guide and tracker, Norman and Lee, the easy interaction and banter in the game viewer and the most amazing sightings. The seats are so comfy and every encounter was amazing, from trees to the big fove. Their knowledge of the bush is outstanding. The food was a world class culinary experience. The food was exceptional with great wine as well. We will need to dieet as soon as we head back home, the snacks on each drive was amazing just a 5 star experience all around. We could not fault anything and will hopefully be back soon. We wish to compliment and thank every single staff member at Lion Sands.
