Several hotels are serving as lockdown facilities in JHB. Most facilities allow food from outside to supplement the awful food provided, a few minutes walk outside per day, and decent communication between staff and inmates, but not here. The rules change constantly, and it seems like staff are taking 2 decades' worth of anger at all the clients of the past out on the unfortunate souls who are in their 'care'.
After some people were allowed to leave after 4 days of quarantine on Friday morning, the remainder were told that the rules state they have to stay for the full 14 days. Apparently it depends who is on duty, and their mood that day. Meals are often delivered late, cold or are the wrong meal, such as processed macaroni cheese being served for breakfast. Inmates have only one contact number for the facility, which is switched off if the staff don't like the questions. Some inmates require time-sensitive medical procedures and medication such is not being allowed.
It is so bad that some inmates are considering breaking the law so that they can upgrade to prison conditions, and be eligible to join the 19,000 prisoners being released.
