I write this as I’m here, on our 4th day of Gran Garbi Mar. There are 3 of us, Me, my boyfriend and our 2 year old daughter.
So with the airline Thomas Cook going bust and our original holiday to Turkey going out the window, we found a last minute deal from September 28th-4th October at Gran Garbi Mar.
Transfer was around 2 hours from Barcelona airport to our hotel, this was purely for the fact that it went around the houses and took everyone to different hotels so next time would definitely use a taxi or something more direct.
We arrived at early hours of the morning on the Sunday around 3:30 AM, we walked into Gran Garbi to check in but they didn’t have our details so had to walk 10 seconds out the back to Gran Garbi Mar (2 different hotels) which we wasn’t aware of. We were explained to that although Gran Garbi and Gran Garbi Mar are 2 different hotels, guests from either site are welcome to use facilities, pools from both hotels. In fact breakfast is served at both settings but lunch, snacks and dinner are only served at Gran Garbi, which we found was absolutely fine as was only a stones throw away from our room.
The staff are pleasant and are usually happy and friendly which is nice.
I must say I was disappointed with the aqua splash at Gran Garbi Mar. The reason for this is the slides were the main reason we booked this place and they were not in use from middle of September so really it is false advertisement as we booked it on the grounds that we were able to use the slides. The slides are only open from June-mid September.
Our room was lovely, smelt fresh, clean bedding every day, clean towels every other day, spacious (enough for the 3 of us) we had 3 single beds but we pushed them all together to make a giant bed! Lots of hangers, huge wardrobe and we had a lovely view of the bay of Lloret de Mar beach from our balcony. Complimentary soap, hair dryer, mini fridge, flatscreen tv and a safe.
The location of the Garbi hotels is perfect, away from the noise you get along the beach but close enough to walk to the beach and amenities/shops etc(literally 6-7 minutes). The bars are lovely down by the beach and in the busier areas and there’s lots of entertainment for older children, we couldn’t find so much for our daughter who is only 2.. she is apparently ‘too young’ for bowling and wasn’t much for her to do outside the hotel.
We did find that in September things start to close I.e marine land, waterworld and other tourist destinations due to it being out of season. We did however go on a lovely boat trip (45 minutes) to Tossa de Mar and spent some time there on the beach and admiring the beautiful views.
Food at Gran Garbi is different to what we are used to back in Essex, England, but there was so much variety. For breakfast there was the usual continental stuff, and eggs, bacon, sausages, beans etc. For Lunches and dinners it was a variety of foods, risottos, curries, spaghetti, sausages, freshly grilled meat/fish, a lot of deep fried things I.e chips, battered sausage type and battered fish. Deserts weren’t all that but I did enjoy the Walnut cake. I actually thought the food was quite pleasant and enjoyed it most days but can see why some fussy eaters may struggle. All inclusive cocktails were ok.. not great but I loved the ones you paid for eg black russian (only €2.50 each) and the wine went down a treat at meal times, Not much drink selection for children at meal times, only pure orange juice or fizzy, my daughter is not allowed pure orange juice and don’t want her drinking fizzy drinks for the 7 days we are here but we did find a shop nearby and bought her some squash which we just take down and mix with water.
Entertainment was different to say the least, I wouldn’t say there is particularly much for the children to do? In Hotel Gran Garbi it has a huge timetable to say what is going on at what time of day but it doesn’t say at what location and if we did manage to catch the entertainment they were late and not something children might enjoy. For example our first night. There was a children’s disco which my daughter loved! The second night was live music (questionable) and last night was a violin concert outside by the pool and their performance was phenomenal, they even performed ‘happy birthday’ to one of the guests which was really sweet. There is also an arcade room for children with grab machines etc but not much other than that.
We still have a few more days left here and I hope we can take some more positives away with us along with the ones we already have.
If I were to give 2 main constructive comments/feedback about this hotel it would be
- to invest more time/money and enthusiasm into children’s entertainment, happy kids = happy parents.
- to extend pool/aqua slide from may-October instead of June-September
Over all I would come back for the location and the
views whilst eating dinner and from our balcony, I also found the beds comfy.
Thank you for our stay and hope to enjoy the rest of our holiday. Hope this helps x
