During our 5 day stay here, it felt like we were the only occupants. There were many bungalows but hardly anyone. We were alone at the beach, alone at the pool, alone at breakfast. I think the reason for this could have been the fact that little is done to upkeep the place or make it less dated. The compounds are poorly lit and so are the rooms. You needed a torchlight if you were coming back after sunset. We could hardly read in the rooms! When we were first checked into a Deluxe Family room, the aircon was not working so we had to move to another room. I saw cob webs, esp. between the wall separating the toilet from the shower room. The toilet was painfully small, and there was barely sufficient leg room. The room was big and the bed was big enough to accomodate 2 adults and 2 kids. The rooms also came with basic amenities like nescafe instant coffee and milo. The mini fridge did not feel cold so we had to put the milk we purchased in the freezer compartment. Every morning we ate the same food - omelette, sausage, bacon, breads and fruit. Breakfast was overlooking the beach and sea so that was nice. The pool was well kept, we saw the cleaners cleaning everyday. Self service for bath towels, because there are just so few people here. If you like a vacation where you just want to be away from city life, and away from the human race, this is the place to be, where no one bothers you and you bother no one. The beauty of this place is that it is literally a 5 min drive from the airport. Unfortunately I realised I had overpaid because the rates fell so much after we checkedin. I paid US$130 per night but the rates dropped significantly after we returned from our trip so I deeply regretted booking early. For this rate I could have gotten a more modern room in the heart of Chaweng town. Like other reviewers, I hate to give a poor rating especially when the staff are nice and helpful. When I complained of a choked sink, the receptionist dropped in within 5 min to check on us before she said she would call for help from housekeeping.

We are actually staying a the resort next door to Coral Bay, but while walking along the beach one day we saw what looked to be an old abandoned resort and yet there were faded table clothes still on the tables and worn out cushions on the beach chairs. It was the Coral Bay Resort. The cottages look to be overgrown and in various states of disrepair and there were no guest anywhere in sight. We wondered what the story was because it sits on a prime piece of real estate. However it looks like it was just abandoned overnight. Frozen in time. The whole place looks like something right out of a horror movie. We decided to walk down the windy, darkened driveway one night after dinner. It was probably a stupid thing to do but I just had to see what was down there. We arrived at the open air lobby that is surprisingly still in pretty good shape however everything surrounding the lobby is very dark and you have no idea what is out there in the jungle. Finally a women appeared and said that they were open. She seemed to be the only person anywhere around which is very strange because it is a tremendous piece of property. Anyway unless you wanted to have a truly authentic Halloween party I could never imagine anyone wanting to stay in a place like this. It really is frightening. There must be plans for the property and it could be something wonderful but until a major and I do mean major! overhaul is done on this place I would sure stay away!

This was the second time we’ve been to Coral Bay and if I remember correctly my first review gave it 5 stars and raved about it. We loved it so much we actually asked if they could do our wedding there and as they don’t do it we went there for our honeymoon instead with family. I can’t tell you how disappointed we were this time. Where to start? The positives: the bird life is amazing and incredible, the little squirrels running around are adorable, the buffet breakfast is pretty good, the people behind the front desk are trying as best they can. Not so positives: Everything else! The bungalows are run down, paint and walls are chipped and cracked. The staff still there seem jaded and although doing their best, seem like it’s just a matter of time until the place is closed. A guy there with his family, spoke to anyone he could about the fact that he knew the owner and she’s letting the place run down so she could sell the land. It really shows. Out of the 5 or so rows of bungalows, only a very few on each row were being used. I asked if we could move to a less run down bungalow and closer to the ocean and was told they were completely full except one space left however for all the 5 or 6 days we were there only 3 in the row of 10 in our row were ever used- same with all the other rows. The thatched roofs of the bungalows are falling apart; It’s been almost never that they’ve cleared the skylights of leaves and debris; The seals on the bathroom were cracked or non-existent; The walls were dirty and chipped and some had huge cracks running through them; The toilet seat (a plastic one) was stained and burnt; The shower shelves were covered in old soap and limescale; The shower taps were dirty and reluctant to move with all the built up limescale; The soap dispensers (I presume it was soap as it wasn’t labelled) were really dirty on the top plunger parts and on day two or three some travel bottles of shampoo and conditioner appeared; The bed was rock solid and not sure if it was actually mattress or wood; The pillows smelt so used and ‘interesting’ that I wrapped a towel around a cushion and used that instead; The towels were old, also smelled ‘interesting’ and had pulls and threads off them( I understand they all said coral bay on them but surely if they’re that used and if there’s no money to get more bespoke ones, just get some new cheap ones that look and smell better?); The DVD player was not connected and there was a second tv remote given to play it instead of one that was the same name brand even than the player. We were lucky here as when we asked for help, the guy at reception spent that night and the day after finding us one and a related remote that worked and set it up for us which was great! The breakfast restaurant: the table clothes were discoloured and had holes in them (not all but most); The restaurant near the pool: the menu is fine but they only serve 3 types of sodas and have more dessert menu as I quote “too expensive” for Coral Bay to have any more options; The pool, I honestly think this was the most shocking- the pool itself had water so dirty in it that you couldn’t see clearly to the bottom or your legs clearly when you were in it and believe me you could smell it. I got out almost straight away and didnt go back in and neither did everyone else we were there with. The tiles were cracked and sharp in places and the shower nearby was only working properly on one of the 4 sides; There were just so many other things that made this trip a massive disappointment for is on our honeymoon and I tried really hard to find somewhere else for us to stay nearby but wasn’t able to at the last minute because of prices. I felt really sorry for the staff here as they were all trying so hard to work with what they had and if you believed the guy we spoke to, the owner has another place that she has taken all the other staff to and has left the resort with a small skeleton crew until she sells. Oh and one other major thing - which has nothing to do with the resort, the hotel next door has completely dredged the bay so there’s no more rocky enclosure and boats now come to the shore in front of the resorts and have killed all the corals with motors, oils and petrols so don’t bother snorkelling. You can have a dip and walk out to the sandbar but that’s about it. Look, I’m not a place snob and have stayed in worse at other times and if this had just been a place to stay while we went around the island for us then that would have been fine. It wasn’t and was supposed to be a place we could relax for the last 5 days of our honeymoon with family and just chill in the luxury we remembered before coming back to the city madness. It wasn’t just our bungalow either as we rented 3 and all three were the same including some of the ones we passed by and looked into. It just wasn’t what is had once been and the contrast was stark as it truly had been a place of stunning beauty and somewhere we saved and spent so much money to come back to only to find it unloved and just wasn’t what it used to be.

Somewhat surprised at the negative reviews after staying here. Yes it is quiet and spread out in the jungle. Hardly abandoned though. We spent 5 nights here. Tended to see the same people at breakfast each morning. We visited the pool a few times and the beach every day. There is a huge sandbar not far off the beach that is a popular place to relax. The cabin was very comfortable with a huge front porch and plenty of room inside. It's a short tuk tuk ride to central Chaweng areas if you want more noise and chaos but we really liked being away from all that.

All in all a nice laid-back resort at the more quiet end of Chanweg beach. I really liked the settings. Small cabins shattered around a jungle-like garden. Sea view from the cabins in at least the two front rows. But the resort could really use an update. But nice and clean and not overcrowded. Pool: nice but not big. But with salt which I really prefer. The sunbeds are old and the mattresses should be stored indoor when it rains and at night to preserved them better There is a table tennis which is nice. But again very old. Beach: ok, but small and the sunbeds could really use an update I would have loved if there had been a couple of stand up paddle boards and kayaks to lent, like at most other resorts. It also seems strange that all other hotels have warnings for eg. jellyfish put up including vinegar for first aid but not this hotel. Reception: really super friendly and helpful. Had a storage of kids stuff for the beach that we could lend free of charge. The staff here is actually one of the best features for this hotel. Cabins: nice, spacious, really hard beds, lousy pillows, the blanket a bit outdated, connecting rooms for families, a bit dark due to the interior, really big terrace but view a bit ruined by a roof that could need some rebuilding. A bit disturbing that both smoke detectors in the rooms we had had been taken down (you could still see where they had been) - not ok!! Wi-Fi: Really lousy. Annoying that you have to log on again and again. Didn't work properly either. Restaurant: at the beach, expensive and not impressing. We only used when we didn't wanted to go out. The restaurant at the next door resort Nora is a good alternative. Breakfast: good buffet with omelettes, French toast, pancakes, fresh fruit, etc
