We had a terrible terrible time at De Aeng. We arrived and were shown to our room. The restaurant was shut which we had not been warned about in advance - there was nowhere else to go as we had been advised not to drive at night due to drink drivers. The room was tired and scrappy compared to how they try to market themselves, but we shrugged this off. However, after flushing the toilet in the bathroom that's when the smell started, and it seeped into the whole room. It was so disgusting that I felt incredibly sick and we had to ask to be moved rooms. There was just a night porter on by this point and he managed to understand that we needed to change rooms. He showed us to another room which seemed to smell fine. However, there was the same problem in this room. As soon as you opened the bathroom door, or used the taps or the water. They have a MAJOR SEWAGE PROBLEM. We shut the bathroom door and felt like we couldn't use it all night because the smell just kept seeping into the room. What's more there were BLOOD And what I hope were coffee stains on the sheets of this room. We looked online for other places to stay but there wasn't anywhere, and nobody on reception to help us anyway.
The next day we told the reception staff we wanted to leave, did not want the second night and certainly didn't want to be charged for it, and we weren't happy to pay the ridiculous price for the disgusting room so wanted to negotiate something more reasonable. Whilst we were in reception area not leaving, my partner was on the phone to the manager trying to discuss this and she called the POLICE on us!! We weren't even going anywhere! The police really did arrive, and the poor receptionist was trying to dissipate the situation saying 'it's fine its ok it's ok'. Unbelievable, we have never been treated in such a way. We paid the room price anyway, which we had been given about 10% off, and we got evidence of the agreement we would not be paying the second booked night and we would leave and go back to Chiang mai. However, unsurprisingly the hotel then reported to booking.com that we were a 'no show'.
What's more - there were dirty mops hanging around the cafe toilet area, literally at eye level, the toilet was blocked and the pool - the reason we booked it - was filthy. The 'concrete chic' they are going for does not work at all, it's like a prison block. The room was majorly shabby with dents and scraps and stains everywhere. A random shoe under the bed which shows cleaning quality. Very busy road outside too.
