I just stayed the night in room 408, and I am returning again in a few days with my fiancé- just for fun! This hotel is very charming if you can appreciate a location for its history. Do not expect LUXURY- because you will not get it. And I don’t think that is a bad thing. It is a humble And quiet hotel with an incredibly interesting history. I am very into the paranormal and I’ll be staying in room 212 this week- supposedly the most haunted room. Take the time to read about the hotel (lobby books and guest booms) and it will make your stay more fun and enjoyable.
Yes, the rooms are outdated. (If you want quiet, request a room in the back of the hotel). But they evoke the era of the gold rush! Enjoy if for what it is, and explore it. The lobby is wonderful to relax in at night and the balcony has a great atmosphere.
NOTE: If you call to book, the employee may tell you there are no available rooms for the day...this wasn’t true, as we booked a room right after calling. Not sure if that was due to laziness or mistake.
Overall, staff was friendly, accommodating (we needed to change rooms because being too close to the elevator bothered my autistic little brother and they gave us the bridal suite!) and open to answering questions. However, there is no lobby staff after 8pm. So be aware of that and make sure you have what you need before then. There was no one at the desk for check out. But they cut staff hours due to COVID.
I think a lot of these negative reviews are too harsh. Be patient and prepared.
