So, my family and I went up to the area on a spur of the moment decision. I had called beforehand asking about breakfast and they said it would be taken back to room but was whatever the cook made in the morning. I asked if it included eggs and such and it said just depends on the cook. We booked the Holiday Inn Express because it had decent reviews on Hotels.com at least. Our experience was awful.
We arrived and the checkin experience was mostly fine except for a key piece of information they forgot to give which I will get to in a moment. Once we got moved into our room, we discovered that the TV came on but had no signal. Not a biggie, called down to have someone come and fix the TV. Then tried using the bathroom and discovered that it did not flush. There was, also, hair on the floor from the previous tenant of the room. Multiple hairs showing it was not well cleaned. Called again about the toilet and the lady said, not sure what can be done about that, I will get back to you. About 30 minutes later the front desk lady shows up with keys to the room next door saying we needed to just switch rooms.
So, we switch rooms. In the new room, the TV and toilet at least worked. However, the carpet around the beds was soaked with water. There was also ants in the room. We decided to live with it and went to bed. The next morning we got up and went down for breakfast. The envelope the key cards were in said breakfast was served till 10:30. However, we came down at 10:10 to which the manager said we stop serving at 10 and points to a small sign. I mentioned that it said till 10:30 on room envelope and he responded, yeah we haven't updated those yet. Would have been nice to tell us at checkin.
Anyway, we go out for a bit and come back that afternoon. When we get into the room, we had a bag full of snacks with full bags of chips, fruit and cookies, etc. It had been sitting on top of one of our suitcases but was missing. We spent 15 minutes looking around for it giving up. As we are walking out of the room towards the elevator my wife spots it on the cleaning lady's cart. Asked about it and she responds she thought it was trash. Really, full bags of chips and such?!
Anyway, we call Hotels.com at this point and ask if we can get out early. The hotel allows it for the next day and we check out the next day. We did arrive early enough on the second day and got their breakfast which consisted of packaged dry foods like muffins and breakfast bars, coffee and canned OJ. It was pretty clear it is what they served everyday which shows that my first question of do they have eggs in the morning was completely untrue.
Overall, the hotel is old and not very well taken care of. Beyond all the things mentioned above the tile was coming up and grout was severely old, etc. Would give it more of a one star rating.
Since we checked out early we ended up switching over to the Stonebrook Lodge in Bryson City. There is a Stonebrook Lodge next door to this hotel too. It was significantly lower priced and was SOOOOOO MUCH better. I will write a review for it to contrast.
