I recently stayed one night at the Days Inn in Middletown, RI. I had a great stay overall! There were a few issues that kept me from giving it 5 stars, but overall would definitely stay again, and recommend to others!
I arrived on a Sunday afternoon to check in, it was a rainy August day, so I could not use the pool, but it was a decent size, and looked nice!
This used to be a Travelodge, and within the past year I believe, they have renovated this property, and did a thorough renovation! I have stayed at this property before, under its old name, over a decade ago, and remember it being a no frills value. This visit in August 2020 I was pleasantly surprised to see how much nicer it is!
I arrived around 4 or so, to check in, and the front desk agent seemed to be in a hotel room, and came running over. I interacted with him several times during my stay, and he was always friendly, informative, and hospitable. He thoroughly explained everything and he was very nice. He does need a new mask though, as it kept slipping down, uncovering his nose!
The hotel had many COVID-19 signs and rules, like only one guest in lobby at a time, masks when indoors, and modified/reduced breakfast. While I wore my mask every time I went from car to room and back, while the hotel wasn't too busy, there were at least 4 or so rooms taken near me, and EVERY guest I encountered did NOT wear a mask, at all, at any time I saw any of them. I saw staff in presence of these guests at least twice and did not hear staff remind/encourage guests to wear masks.
After check in, I went towards my room, but was upset to find used/dirty linen and trash piled up next to the door to access the interior corridor rooms from parking lot. I had to hold my breath to not inhale Covid infested trash/linens while walking by. That should not be there...
Otherwise hallways/stairs were all new carpeting, clean, and renovated! Windows were open which helped with ventilation. There is also a small fitness room by this door.
I had a King Deluxe Room, I called ahead to request a balcony room, and was given one of 5 balcony rooms at the hotel, room #210. The man who checked me in had also helped me on phone and was very friendly and accommodating when I had called to request a balcony room! It is the only room with a separate balcony as other 4 rooms have connected balconies with a divider wall. All face the pool area. This room is in the indoor portion of the hotel, which has roughly 20 rooms between two floors, while all other rooms have an exterior entrance. I liked the room key/door entry where you just tap your card which worked well.
The room was quite impressive, was fully renovated, and could have easily been taken for a higher brand hotel like Hampton Inn or Comfort Inn. As it was the king deluxe, it was bigger than other rooms, and it had everything you could need! There were two love seats, a coffee table, safe, a desk with chair, modern lamps, 32ish inch TV, fridge, microwave, and SEVERAL plugs (Strip by bed and each lamp had USB and a plug!). Every piece of furniture was replaced/was new when the hotel was renovated.
I really liked the colors and overall look and design of the room, very modern, and very high quality for a Days Inn. I honestly have never stayed at a Days Inn and typically stay at hotels 1-2 tiers above. I was looking for a value one night stay and this hotel definitely satisfied my need, as it was one of the cheapest rooms in the area for high season, but it was really nice and has everything you need!
Only a few issues kept me from rating this a 5 star stay!
1. Trash/used Linens in hallway
2. Guests not wearing masks/no seen enforcement of rules
3. Bathroom tile grout not perfect, there was tape/a bandaid looking patch on the bathrub, and between the mirror and light there were TWO large holes in the dry wall and I could see behind which was unpleasant.
4. Bathroom Door had a very loose door knob.
5. Bed fitted sheet had a half dollar size hole (but other wise clean, mattress cover needs to be washed though)!
6. One of Two face towels had pink stains on it
7. Towels a bit rough
8. I received 2 lotions, 1 conditioner, NO SHAMPOO, and only ONE small soap! Luckily I had extra soap and shampoo... They do give a shower cap and make up remover though! Nice touch! Bathroom counter was massive too! Lots of space!
9. NO ALARM CLOCK
10. Some noise from other guests but tolerable
I liked that the hotel tried to offer some type of breakfast even though full offerings were unavailable due to Covid-19. At check in, they explain you can get a bagged breakfast at front desk from 7-10am! Love that it is until 10am as I get very irked when a hotel ends breakfast by 9! In the bag was a chocolate chip muffin and a bagel + Cream Cheese. Untoasted bagels aren't that great but better than nothing! You could also go into breakfast room to get coffee, juice, and cereal!
When I went, there was a maskless man making coffee, so after I waited for a few seconds, I had to leave due to being repulsed, went to my room, and came back. Luckily he had left, but then I realized the milk was out, I went to front desk, a woman helped me and refilled milk, and the maskless older man again wandered into the breakfast room ugh! Staff did not tell him to wear a mask. The coffee was pretty good but my skin was crawling making my coffee in that room where maskless people are touching everything! I did like all cups were plastic wrapped! They had a sign telling people to remove plastic, so sadly, someone must have tried to fill their cup without removing plastic! Wow!
Check out was quick, the nice man asked me about how I enjoyed my stay, and when I got breakfast, I asked to check out at noon instead of 11am, and he happily granted my request! Great service!
Overall, the stay was better than expected, it wasn't too crowded (maybe 10-15 cars), the property was nicely renovated, rooms nicely painted, everything was clean, service was excellent, and the stay was a great value compared to other nearby properties! The outdoor pool is a decent size and looked welcoming. I enjoyed my balcony, which was small but cozy, comfortable for some outdoor space, and I liked how it was lined with a black non-slip floor covering! The door to balcony looked new too! The room was excellent, all new furniture, very comfortable room, AC worked pretty well, 4 pillows on bed and luckily an extra 5th pillow in closet area, and bed was pretty comfortable but a bit noisy. I would definitely recommend this hotel if you are visiting the area, and want a nice clean and renovated room, without blowing all of your vacation funds! It is definitely one of the nicest Days Inn's out there I'd imagine as they did a great job renovating the property and choosing nice furnishing for the room! Very nicely done!
