Stayed for 5 nights & enjoyed the food, villas, service and the scenery around the resort. A great place to relax and refresh or set up base while you explore around the island. The bungalows offer privacy but you can still stroll along the beach front and interact with locals as they fish and dive on the reef. I highly recommend Amutia Resort for the authentic Melanesian experience with all the luxuries of home at affordable rates. Check it out.

We absolutely loved this place--the views, the beach, the hospitality, the food. Some aspects of it could use a little TLC, but that also contributed to the character of the place. Stellah was an amazing hostess. We would highly recommend. Get the room with the ocean view.

Amutia is a Polynesian word that means “special”. As this place is. Family owned and operated, was built 20 years ago by New Zealander Hugh, who runs it with wife Stella. It has an interesting story. In March 2015 cyclone Pam hit Tanna badly. Hugh says that his resort was the only one left largely unscathed, so it hosted for the following four years the contractors rebuilding the major resorts north of the airport. It must have been a blessing in the short term, but not so much in the long term. In fact, while those were rebuilt and modernised, Amutia was not. And it shows. But then, to some it is preferable the aseptic sumptuousness of standardised resorts-cum spa; to others it may be more attractive a down to earth traditional lodge. We got a garden villa, and we weren’t happy with its condition. When we mentioned this to the management, we were upgraded to a sea-front villa at no additional cost. Still spartan, but with nice touches and a view. Some of the spartan aspects could be easily explained to the guests with a leaflet informing that the resort has moved to complete solar. This means some savings had to be made: kettle and hair dryer are not provided, but guests can ask for them if they need them. Water heating is gas. Taking Amutia back to its resort status won’t be easy. But why bother? Amutia is on the path to become a great Eco-lodge, which would appeal to many. Highlights: there is a real beach, with black sand (however un-swimmable, as most of Tanna is); food is good and abundant; if you happen to be there on a Sunday, you can spend a morning watching the arrival, dangerous mooring and unloading of the ferry from Port Vila, accompanied by impromptu market. At a 3-minute walk. We’ve been guests in some fancy resorts in our Vanuatu holiday, but Amutia is the one we’ll remember. Hugh and Stella, tangkyu tumas and good luck. W&A

Amutia Resort staff were exceptionally hospitable going out of their way to make our stay comfortable and enjoyable. We were a team consisting of both Vanuatu and overseas based medical practitioners and Amutia accommodated all our different requirements some of which were out of the ordinary with ease and kindness. The pricing is a good value and appropriate to the services available. The setting is a delightful peaceful location being right on the beachfront , with the sound of the sea to soothe us to sleep after a hard days work.
