We are seasoned travellers that have stayed in very authentic, rustic villages before in Mexico, Amazon, Thailand and more. This stay is on a very remote road close to the Volcano, 1 hour walk from Volcano gates. The pros - This place has an amazing, awesome view of the volcano. At night you can hear and feel the explosions. The people working and operating this stay were fantastic. The food was great. The picture attached was the view from the room. The cons - you need to be ready for a very rustic experience. No power, no hot water, cold water pressure very low. Room not sealed, no screens and door didn't close. There was a bug screen over bed but you have to be aware that you will sleep with Jungle wildlife at night (bugs and rodents). No fans or any type of relief from the heat. The road gets worse with the rain. If you are not good with rough 4X4 roads, rethink. We are glad that we had this experience but we found the limit of our comfort border. We left early as we couldn't handle having a rat and roaches in the room at night. Sorry for the rough review but we have to be honest for other travellers. I am sure many backpacker travellers would be OK with this place. The people there are fantastic.

We stayed three nights in a large bungalow with amazing views of the volcano across the valley. The food provided by the hosts is locally grown and delicious. The bed is comfortable and the room clean. Recommend. Hiking trails abound nearby and the volcano is an easy 40min walk away. At the Tanna airport, just ask to go to Richard’s place in Imayo.

This was truly something - a very rare & wonderful experience staying in Richard & Suzanne’s stunning jungle bungalow. The view of the live volcano fireworks display right from our bed will stay with us forever, as we snuggled down for a great sleep in the surprisingly warm and comfortable bed despite a howling wind around us. As for the afternoon in the nearby kastom village, followed by witnessing the extraordinary fireworks display from the very rim of the volcano, now that really is a once in a lifetime memory. Not for the faint hearted but definitely worth the long and bone chattering ride up the jungle track to get there. Oh and I was very impressed that they could cater for gluten free dietaries - just give them enough warning. Thanks Richard & Suzanne.

From our huge double bed we spent the night watching Tanna's humbling volcano glowing orange and spewing occassional volleys of lava rocks. You can hear and feel the rumbles while you sleep. We ate a lovingly prepared dinner and chatted to Richard and his sweet kids before an early bedtime. We had the privilege of using Richard's new jungle bathroom. The water is cool, but fresh from a mountain spring.

We really enjoyed our stay at Richard's bungalows in Imao, Tanna and the visit to the volcano. Richard and his family are the nicest people ever! We stayed in a Bungalow Richard had just recently finished and it was great - very comfortable and clean with electricity. The bungalows are very remote so it is a bumpy ride to get out there and there's no hot water and basic but nice food - but it is very much worth it for the views and the experience. As the previous reviews have pointed out, transport on the island can be difficult and expensive but Richard organised this for us and we had no issues. However, we only stayed the one night but if you were planning on staying longer you would definitely have to factor in the high cost of transport. Overall, Tanna was a very beautiful island and the volcano was a great once in a life time experience and I would definitely recommend Volcanic Village Vista as a great place to stay.
