Madam Cuc's was the first place I stayed at on my 3 week trip through Vietnam, booking a standard single room. What I wanted more than anything was a respite to get adjusted to the blazing heat and blaring noise of Saigon. There wasn't anything fancy about this hotel, but it was clean, spacious and in close proximity to practically everything. I could just hear nearby Bùi Viện St, but it was never too loud. The staff were helpful and funny in a sarcastic kind of way. I had my choice of breakfast every morning, which I probably only took them up on a few times. But when I did, it was tasty and prepared on the spot. Doing as much walking as I did, I booked a massage through the hotel. They offer professional massages at a pretty standard rate. I was really pleased with mine and it was the perfect wind-down to a big day. On my last day, I booked a Mekong Delta tour through the hotel desk. I was picked up in the early morning out front and dropped off somewhere close by. Having stayed a total of 5 nights, my only disappointment was that I didn't meet anyone else my age there. I was hoping there would be more of a hostel/traveller type vibe, but it's much more akin to a budget hotel with private rooms, with everyone doing their own thing. I would recommend this place to anyone travelling with a partner or wanting a bit a piece and quiet that's centrally located in a hectic city.

Booked via booking.com so ultimately an easy booking process. Even managed to arrange a transport from the airport for us via email which looking back on it must have mustered all their ability. Unfortunately that’s where the pleasantness ends. We arrived in HCMC centre and immediately from inside the taxi realised we were at the wrong hotel. The taxi driver, bless him, was as confused as we were. After telling the driver we booked a different hotel he made a phone call and someone appeared at the passenger side window as if he just emerged from the pavement. Not wanting to keep the taxi driver waiting we let him go and went inside to the dankest, dingiest, dirty and unwelcoming construction site of a hotel reception I’ve seen. It was awful, I could feel my girlfriends heart drop from 10 feet away. The receptionist/manager/concierge/cleaner/cook/masseur/builder/town crier then explained to us that our original booking at the Hoang Dung had to be moved to this new hotel; Madam Cuc 127. It had been moved because the air conditioning at Huang Dong was broken. The two hotels are apparently owned by the same people. Fine, we said but why didn’t you inform us and let us know? - we should have been afforded a choice! He said he didn’t have our email which was rubbish because they’d been communicating with us about airport transfers earlier in the week. Total b*****t basically. Just wanted to ensure they got our money and not someone else! Because if we had been offered this hotel via emails we never would have accepted - you couldn’t have paid me to stay there! He insisted that we had been given the “suite”, the best room in the hotel and a “much better” room than what we had originally booked! OK! We decided to check out the room; we just wanted to make the most of our short stay in HCMC. The room he took us to was absolutely awful! Dirty and small far below what we had expected from the photos and recommendations of our original booking. Either a Donald-Trumpesque lair or we escaped an even worse fate at Hoang Dung. We weren’t having it! After going back down to reception to say we wanted a new solution our mate got upset we didn’t want to stay. When we wanted him to cancel the booking so we wouldn’t get charged it took us 30 mins and had to pay in cash for the airport transfer before he would email us in writing that we wouldn’t be charged for “late cancelation” as per booking.com policy. Truly awful hospitality and should really look into a different line of work. Stranded without anywhere to stay in HCMC we started to scour last minute websites for hotel bookings. What we found was the bargain of a lifetime! A 4- star hotel, buffet breakfast included, a spa, and rooftop pool with an incredible view of the city - £100 for two nights!! Considerably less than what these clowns were looking to charge us!

We arrived at 1am as we had listed we would to be met with a very long wait for the lady at reception to sort out our check in. We were then presented with a room with only 1 bed after booking a family deluxe room that was listed to have 2 large double beds. We then found out they had double booked the rooms. We were eventually given a 2nd very tiny room that was dirty, stunk of smoke and had dripping water. They told us we would be sorted out for the following night. The following night they had moved our belongings through the day and an iphone charger went missing. They then told us that the room we had booked was still not available so we were in a basic room. They did not refund us money or give us a discount and were extremely rude. I believe they tick all the boxes for what is in the room despite not having it. I would also be surprised if they had the type of room we booked in the first place. DO NOT STAY HERE!

The room was booked and confirmed via booking.com. However on the day of our arrival, 1h before we got there, I got a message, that the credit card had issues. On our arrival we learned, that we couldn't get a room due to this issue, eventhough we were ready to pay cash right away. The staff let us understand that we had to stay somewere else, because the Manager didn't want us to stay because of that issue, eventhough we would have payed cash for this or any other room. We found an alternative hotel but you don't want to arrive and be told you cannot stay in your booked hotel. It causes stress you don't want in your hollydays. Plus it felt like we were criminals only because the credit card did not work. Anyway, the booking happened several weeks in advance, they could have canceled everything much earlier so that we could have looked for something new from at home. I wouldn't book it again, eventhough the pictures look nice, as i could not trust them for having the booked room ready.

A fine budget hotel. Beds fine, room fine, bathroom fine. We had a balcony over the road which was nice to use and view life on the street. You will need earplugs and an eyemask as the noise from the street throughout the night and the morning light coming through the curtains will disturb you. Breakfast was nice, with a freshly cooked omelette, tea and coffee.
