I originally booked at Smiley Apartment 9 on Pham Ngu Lao Street but the apartment did not have a sofa bed as advertised. So management offered me to move to Smiley 3 which has two beds I required. Smiley 3 is located on a large alley where taxi can bring you to the door. However, it is located at the edge of District 1 and is kind of far way from popular points of interest in the city. The not perfect location is the least of the problems with my stay at Smiley 3. At the first glance, the place seems to be clean. The reality sank in when I lie down on one of the beds. The bed must be an old cheap bed with very little padding that is completely flatten with use. I can feel the metal wires and springs poking my body. The other bed has a completely different problem. It is as hard as a rock. Some of you may not know what I meant by a bed as hard as a rock. This is a mattress made of compressed fabric materials and can be fold into 3. It can be purchased for less than $10. It is stiff as a piece of wallboard. Further, the room I stayed in was infested with ants. The ants were all over the place, on the floor, on the desk, on the coffee table, on the sofa and on the beds. And obviously it would crawl on me when I sat on the sofa or slept on the bed. The ants would feed on my food if I left it outside the fridge. I complained to the front desk and ask them to provide ant poison to kill off the ants. They did not have any ant poison and offered to do spray the room with insecticide. I refused because it is not safe to have my room completely sprayed with insecticide. Also, at least in one occasion I saw a large cockroach crawling on the floor and at another time a lizard trying to look for food on the coffee table. Adding to the injuries, one day the air conditioner did not cool the room properly. I brought the issue up with the front desk. They told me that the person in charge of maintenance is out of town. After two nights of sleeping in sweltering heat, I voiced my displeasure at the front desk. Instead of trying to find a repair person to check on the air conditioner, they tried to distract the problem by blaming my guests of being noisy causing complaints from guests staying in other rooms. I just wondered why I hear this now, not immediately when the other guests complained. By the way, my guests were not noisy and I did not believe that we disturbed any other guests. I would not recommend this place to any one and I will not stay here again.

I should have known better: I stayed here previously but it was not a smooth stay. On my last visit, the maid lost five pair of my socks but management refused to accept responsibility for the maid's obvious blunder. I left a little later because the room was previously booked but I also gave a deposit for another room on a higher level. When I returned about a week later, I dropped my luggage down in the new room but did not even unpack. The room reeked so bad of cigarette smoke from the previous tenants who were chain smokers that I did not take possession of the room. Even the cushions on the sofa smelled like a pack of cigarettes. What ensued was me leaving for a hotel with the request that they find me another room in one of their three other apartments so I would first have a place to stay and second not lose my deposit. This did not happen. The following few days, she ignored both my SMS messages and telephone calls, until finally I stopped trying. In light of both of these unprofessional and even dishonest practices, I would warn any potential guest to tread with caution at the Smiley Apartments, if not avoiding them all together. They have no concept of a win-win situation, of negotiating with a customer and in what is all too prevalent in Vietnam, once somebody gets your money, you are at their mercy - which is no mercy at all. There are also better options with more modern furniture and equipment for the same price or cheaper in both district 1 and 3 in HCMC (Saigon).
