Narita International Airport

General Requirement

As of May 8, 2023, Japan has fully lifted all COVID-19 related entry restrictions and returned to normal immigration rules. This includes the removal of the daily entry cap for foreign arrivals. All usual visa exemptions are now applicable to eligible visitors, allowing citizens of approximately 70 countries, such as Australia, the United States, and all European Union nations, to once again travel to Japan visa-free for up to 90 days by presenting a valid passport.

  • For passengers who are not citizens of a country exempt from visas, a visa is required to visit Japan.
  • It is important to ensure that a valid passport and any other required documents are obtained prior to entering the country.
  • If a passenger possesses an e-Passport, they can utilize the Electronic Customs Declaration Gates (e-Gates) upon arrival in Japan to complete the border control process.

Airport Operational Hours

At Narita Airport, there is a restriction on flight operations between midnight and 6 a.m., unless under certain circumstances. This rule aims to minimize noise pollution, which was a significant issue for the local community when the airport was initially constructed. However, it's important to note that all three terminals of Narita Airport remain operational around the clock, seven days a week. While some doors may be closed during the nighttime hours, the central terminal doors should remain open.

Note: Passengers transiting overnight must complete arrival immigration and customs procedures.

Transit Procedure

When connecting between international flights, passengers are not required to undergo Immigration procedures if they are staying in the departure area (airside) until their next flight. However, Immigration procedures will be required if passengers wish to leave this area to meet a friend or to go outside the airport. In some cases, a visa may also be required.
