Japan borders are fully opened for passengers who have been fully vaccinated or received a booster shot.

• Effective on May 11, 2023, Japan has downgraded COVID-19 to the same level as seasonal influenza. All remaining COVID-19 controls have been removed.
• Effective on April 29, 2023
  • All travelers and returnees will no longer be required to submit either a certificate of negative result of COVID-19 test conducted within 72 hours prior to departure, or a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate of three doses or equivalent.
  • Currently implemented measures including random sampling test which are provisional measures for all travelers and returnees arriving from China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau) by direct flights, will be replaced to the testing on arrival required to those who show symptoms, which is the same measure applied to all other travelers and returnees.

Visa Policy

• Effective on November 7, 2022

  • The receiving organization located in Japan is no longer required to complete the Entrants, Returnees Follow-up Systems (ERFS) for new entry of foreign nationals entering Japan for a short-term stay(less than 90 days) for the purpose of business, employment, or tourism, and for a long-term stay.
  • Those who wish to visit acquaintances but have not been permitted and those who need to enter Japan for transit purposes are permitted to enter Japan.
  • Inviting person is no longer required to agree to the pledge which has been required to apply for a short-term stay visa for the purpose of visiting families/ acquaintances.
