Economy Class Trains: The Best Choice for Affordable and Comfortable Travel
Economy-class trains are passenger trains operated by PT KAI and positioned below Business Class in the service hierarchy. They are a popular choice among travelers thanks to their affordable fares and adequate onboard facilities. Most economy-class trains are equipped with air conditioning (AC), making journeys more comfortable, especially during hot weather.
These upgraded economy-class seats were introduced in response to growing passenger demand for a better travel experience at an economical price.In Indonesia, economy-class trains are categorized into several types based on their seating configurations. On September 26, 2023, Kereta Api Indonesia officially introduced its newest seating concept: the New Generation Economy Class.
The New Generation Economy Class combines modern design, advanced technology, and enhanced features to improve passenger comfort and overall travel experience. In addition, these latest economy-class coaches offer improved safety systems, including CCTV monitoring, accident detection technology, and cleaner, more modern restroom facilities. Each New Generation Economy coach features a total of 72 seats, equipped with captain-style seating and more spacious legroom for greater comfort. For its inaugural operation, the New Generation Economy coach was introduced as part of the Jayabaya train service.
Economy-class train tickets are divided into several fare subclasses: C, P, Q, S, and Z.
Economy Train Seat Category
Each economy-class train carriage offers different seating options. Below are some of the most common economy-class seat types available on Indonesian trains:
Regular Seats
Regular seats are the most common type of economy-class seating. These seats are typically arranged in a 2–2 or 3–2 configuration, accommodating around 80 to 106 passengers per carriage. Depending on the train type and year of manufacture, some economy-class coaches are equipped with either split air conditioning or centralized air conditioning. This option allows passengers to enjoy affordable train travel at budget-friendly fares.
Premium Economy Seats
In addition to regular seating, some economy-class trains offer premium seats. These provide enhanced comfort with more spacious seating and improved amenities. Premium seats are commonly found in former KRD MCW 301 and MCW 302 coaches. Equipped with centralized air conditioning, these seats deliver a more comfortable and premium travel experience.
New Generation Economy Seats
Introduced in 2023, New Generation Economy seats represent the latest innovation in economy-class train travel. Featuring captain-style seats with center armrests, passengers can freely adjust the seat recline for greater comfort. Combined with premium seat materials and generous legroom, these seats are designed to provide a more enjoyable and relaxing travel experience.
