Renting a Car in Bali: What Foreigners Need to Know
Getting behind the wheel is easy if you have the right documents. Here are the general requirements for international tourists.
Required Documents:
- Passport: You'll need your original passport or at least a clear photocopy for identity verification.
- International Driving Permit (IDP): This is mandatory. According to Indonesian law, you must have an IDP to drive yourself. Your home country's license alone is not enough. The IDP must also cover the type of vehicle you are renting (e.g., a car).
- Driver's License from Your Home Country: Bring this along as a supplement to your IDP.
- Security Deposit: Most rental companies require a security deposit. This is typically around IDR500,000–IDR1,000,000. It can often be paid in cash or by holding a scanned copy of your credit card.

Who Rents Cars in Bali? A Look at Traveler Habits
Different nationalities have different travel styles. Based on our observations, here's a glimpse into the car rental habits of visitors to Bali.
- Australians: As they are used to left-hand traffic, Australians are very comfortable driving in Bali. They are generally organized, follow the rules, book well in advance, and love exploring the southern coast from Seminyak to Uluwatu.
- Germans: German tourists are known for being meticulous. They often check the car's condition thoroughly, ensure they have proper insurance, and prefer fuel-efficient models. They tend to obey traffic laws strictly and enjoy driving to cultural spots like Ubud and the peaceful northern regions.
- French: Often seeking an "authentic Bali," French travelers love to explore off the beaten path. They frequently ask for local route recommendations to discover hidden waterfalls and villages. While generally budget-conscious, they prioritize safety.
- Dutch: Tourists from the Netherlands enjoy independent exploration and are no strangers to a good road trip. They often rent cars to explore the entire island, including drives to the northern regency of Buleleng and the eastern coast of Amed.
- Russians: In recent years, there has been a significant increase in long-term car and motorcycle rentals from Russian tourists. However, a word of caution: some attempt to rent without a valid IDP, which can lead to serious legal and insurance problems.
What About Renting with a Driver?
Not everyone wants to drive themselves. Tourists from China often prefer to hire a car with a driver (charter service), as language can be a barrier to self-drive rentals. Similarly, visitors from Singapore find it more convenient and cost-effective to use drivers or ride-hailing apps for their short trips.
ATTENTION: Your Driving License is Non-Negotiable
This is incredibly important, so please pay close attention.
You MUST have a valid International Driving Permit (IDP) to legally drive a car or scooter in Bali.
Many tourists are unaware of this rule. Some local rental shops might be less strict and rent you a vehicle without checking for an IDP. DO NOT take this risk. The responsibility falls entirely on you, the renter.
If you are stopped by the police without an IDP, you will face a fine. Worse, if you get into an accident, your travel insurance will be VOID because you were driving illegally. This could leave you with massive medical bills and legal fees.
Always prioritize your safety and legal obligations. Get your IDP before you leave home.
