Purwokerto Station (PWT) is a large category A train station located on the edge of Purwokerto City, Banyumas Regency, Central Java. This station is at an altitude of +75 m under the management of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero) Operation Area V Purwokerto.

Purwokerto Station functions as the main connecting point in Banyumas Regency. 

 

This station is a transit point for all passenger trains crossing Central Java, connecting Jakarta with destinations such as Yogyakarta, Surakarta, Surabaya and Malang. Currently, this station is equipped with a double track, making it possible to travel from Jakarta to Purwokerto via Cirebon or vice versa in 4-5 hours.

History of Purwokerto Station

 

The history of Purwokerto Station began during the Dutch colonial era when it was founded by the Serajoedal Stoomtram Maatschappij (SDS) railway company on December 5 1893. The line initially connected Purwokerto Station with Wonosobo and was used to support the transportation of agricultural products, such as sugar cane and sugar, from the Banyumas area. 

 

As transportation needs grew, this line joined the Dutch government's railway network, Staatsspoorwegen (SS), which connects Purwokerto Station with major cities on the island of Java. This station also underwent several renovations during the colonial era and became a center for transporting goods and passengers in Central Java. 

 

After Indonesia's independence, Purwokerto Station was managed by PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) and continued to play an important role in transportation in Java. In 1971, Purwokerto Station (PWT) was designated as the center of Operational Area V (Daop V), covering the railway network in western Central Java and becoming a strategic operational control center in the region.
