The Carleton at Oak Park is in a lovely historic building. The rooms are clean and not extravagant, but not barebones, either. The art on the wall showed historic happenings in Chicago and was far more interesting than ordinary hotel art. We were offered help with our bags, but we did not need it. We were able to park in a lot half a block away with no problem. There are two restaurants in the hotel building and great options in the neighborhood. There is a train stop a block away, and the trains are audible, but this did not bother us. The upstairs neighbor stomping around at 5 AM, on the other hand, was quite disruptive. If you are a light sleeper, bring earplugs. All in all a really pleasant, comfortable and delightfully unpretentious place to stay.

I would definitely stay here again! It was in a very quiet neighborhood and I felt safe as a woman traveling alone. My room was large, had a kitchenette, large bathroom...it was clean and was well maintained. The feel-like temp was over 100 during my stay and the AC worked great. The hotel is very charming and well decorated. They have free parking which is a huge plus! They have a restaurant on site, but I did not have a chance to try it. It looked very nice, though. It's a block away from the green line, which I utilized to get to Wrigley. They lock all of the exterior doors at night, which gave me extra reassurance. Overall, I had no issues!

I stayed in one of the smaller rooms, which was fine for me and my 1 night stay. The bed was on the firm side, which I definitely enjoyed. The firmer the better for me! There were 2 sinks in the bathroom even though it was probably one of their smaller rooms. The block glass window in the shower was nice for natural light, and provided space to put my shower items. There was a a kitchen area with a large college dorm room type of fridge and a microwave. I arrived a couple hours before check in and was able to get into my room without any extra fees some places seem to be doing to nickel and dime you - such a turn off. So I appreciated that for sure. There are various parking lots nearby, so grab a map to be prepared in case one is full. I was back pretty late at night, so one was full, but the map guided me to another one near, which had all 4 spots available, on a Thursday night. Plenty of restaurants, bars, and shopping a short walk away, and of course the Green line and the Metra if going to Chicago without having to take your car and park. Overall, a great stay, and I wouldn't hesitate to stay again while in the area.
