It's a pretty place to spend a few nights. Old-fashioned with modern details. Antique furniture. Gorgeous feet wide hardwood plank floors. Woven bamboo mats on the ceilings. Freshly varnished wooden shutters with intriguing street scenes painted on the walls outside the windows. Nice staff as English is spoken. Cafe de Mana is taken in the grottolike basement restaurant. Paying in cash upfront receives a small discount. If you are in Sao Joan to ride the Maria Maca to Tirada, you cannot get any closer to the station than this pousada. It is also close to the city center of this very interesting. A quiet place unless there is a late night wedding reception next door.

The pousada is near the train station but a short walk from the main bus station, though you can take a short local bus for i$ 2 single. The rooms are fairly small, run down, and strangely decorated with waived ceiling panels and windows that open into the room providing a view of the wall of the adjacent building with each with its own train themed painting. The toiletshower was very small and we are not fat people. The friendly staff was eager to help except for the breakfast lady who was not pleased when I told her the cheese and ham needed to be restocked. Breakfast is adequate and not plentiful, as described in lonely planets 2008. Would recommend if you have an early bus to take out of town. All buses outside the railway station will stop outside the greta de Sao Francisco de Sao Francisco de Sao Gabriel. In the end, it was a great treat to smoke mary, an ancient steam train that runs between sao joan del rei and the very lovely old gold mining town of tiradentes. There is plenty of time to wander the shops and buy good textiles and a cup of beer before taking the rp train back to sdr for $ 25 for a single ticket. Only about 15 minutes in cash. The place is very convenient because close to the station and in the heart of the old town. The room and showers are a bit small but tidy and well maintained. The staff was very nice and the breakfast was great. The room and shower are a little small but clean and well maintained.
